Sun, Surf, Sand, and SARC

Date: 06/15/26 | Category: OIG

As you get ready for summer, looking for that good beach read, we have something for you!

We just released our latest Semiannual Report to Congress (SARC). It’s a summary of our work to improve the integrity, accountability, and efficiency of the U.S. Postal Service and its regulator, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), for the first half of the 2026 fiscal year. This SARC focuses on two major issues the Postal Service is facing right now: postal finances and postal crime. It highlights both our efforts to find opportunities for USPS to save money and make the details of the Postal Service’s finances more accessible to postal stakeholders and the public. The SARC also describes recent OIG investigations that fight fraud, waste, and abuse by shutting down efforts by criminal groups to get postal employees to steal mail and traffic narcotics through the mail.

Over the past six months we accomplished the following results:

  • Our auditors and researchers issued 38 reports to the Postal Service and the PRC and made 89 recommendations to postal management.
  • Our investigators completed almost 1,200 investigations and made 433 arrests and 357 convictions or pretrial diversions. Our investigative work resulted in over $13.5 million returned to the Postal Service.
  • Our Hotline was kept busy as well, receiving over 123,000 contacts.

What’s the total financial impact of our audit and investigative work? Almost $3 billion over the six-month period!

There’s a lot more to read about, so take a moment to read the SARC or look at our digital story to get more details about our accomplishments. Comment below on what key strategic area stood out to you the most.
