It’s Been a Busy (Fiscal) Year at the OIG

Date: 12/12/24 | Category: OIG

Every six months, as required by the IG Act, we publish our Semiannual Report to Congress, or SARC. It’s our way of reporting what we’ve accomplished across the agency.

Our latest SARC, covering the period from April 1 through September 30, spotlights the extraordinary work our employees have performed across key areas: mail theft, narcotics, the Postal Service’s Delivering for America plan, electric vehicles, and Election Mail.

While the report provides statistics for the past six months, it’s also a chance to see what we’ve done over the past year… and it’s been a busy one! Over the course of fiscal year (FY) 2024, our auditors and researchers issued 141 reports, with a total financial impact of more than $550 million.

Our special agents were equally impressive in FY 2024, closing 2,905 investigations and securing 704 convictions. This resulted in a strong financial impact of more than $358 million in cost avoidance and fines, restitutions, and recoveries, with over $25 million returned to the Postal Service.

We’ve achieved all of this with a talented and efficient, but lean staff. In a time of constrained budgets, we are challenged to meet the increased demand for our work to oversee major Postal Service changes, and the continuing threats of narcotics and mail theft.

Take a moment to read the SARC or look at our digital story to get more details about our accomplishments, feel free to comment on what key strategic area stood out to you the most.

you had a delivery audit where the delivery unit stopped sending notices back to the plant becasue they thought doing it was futile because the plant never did anything about late trips etc.. YET.. You let the plant off the hook and did not go back up the trail of the audit and FIND OUT WHY.. you wasted your time and did a useless audit... Answer that...

Staying on top of all the fraud, etc in our post office
Dept is an ongoing huge job. I appreciate what you are doing trying to eliminate the ongoing problems in the post office system. I am amazed at the number of employees that don’t appreciate the jobs they have as most of them make more money than the average worker and benefits better than average also. Americans need to learn to appreciate what they have as we are better off than any other country.
