Working with our Law Enforcement Partners

Our special agents investigate nationwide internal crimes and fraud committed by postal employees and contractors as well as postal employee misconduct. We work with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and local prosecutors across the country to prosecute these crimes. 

In some instances, we uncover much larger criminal activity being carried out by multiple individuals and organizations. In many of these cases, we partner with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to identify and hold responsible those who take advantage of the public’s trust in our postal system.

Postal carrier pleads guilty after discarding mail in a dumpster

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A Hampton man pled guilty today to improperly destroying mail. According to court documents, on Dec. 9, 2023, Michael Thirkield, 31, a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier, dumped several boxes of mail into a dumpster in the Forest Lake Court area in Newport News. Thirkield did not report to work after that day and left his USPS satchel on his porch with a handwritten note stating, “For the mail carrier.”

Administrator of Scam Telegram Channel Sentenced for Multi-Million Dollar Fraud

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A Birmingham-area man has been sentenced to a decade in prison for his role running a Telegram channel that sold millions of dollars in stolen and fraudulent checks, announced U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton L. Peeples.

West Virginia Business Defrauds, Pays the United States Postal Service

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Frame, Inc., a construction service company operating in West Virginia and Florida, has paid restitution of $187, 286 for defrauding the federal government.

Federal Prosecutors Highlight Efforts To Stop Rising Mail Thefts And Prosecute Offenders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office has intensified federal efforts to address the surge in mail thefts by increasing the prosecution of cases involving stolen mail, announced Dena J. King, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. Federal prosecutors and investigators are also urging residents and businesses to take proactive measures to prevent thefts and report stolen mail promptly.

Granite City Mail Carrier Admits to Stealing from USPS Collection Box

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – A mail carrier employed by the U.S. Postal Service pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing from a collection box in Granite City. Phillip E. Tucker, 37, of Madison, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail by postal employee.
