Working with our Law Enforcement Partners

Our special agents investigate nationwide internal crimes and fraud committed by postal employees and contractors as well as postal employee misconduct. We work with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and local prosecutors across the country to prosecute these crimes. 

In some instances, we uncover much larger criminal activity being carried out by multiple individuals and organizations. In many of these cases, we partner with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to identify and hold responsible those who take advantage of the public’s trust in our postal system.

Former Postal Service Employee Sentenced for Stealing Money and Gift Cards from the Mail

INDIANAPOLIS—Justin Crain, 29, of Indianapolis, has been convicted of a felony and sentenced to 180 days of home detention, followed by three years of probation, 40 hours of community service, and a $5,000 fine after pleading guilty to mail theft by a U.S. Postal Service employee.

ST. LOUIS – A U.S. Postal Service mail handler was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court and accused of pandemic fraud and stealing checks from the mail. Anthony Virdure II, 29, was indicted on three counts of mail theft and one count of wire fraud. The indictment accuses Virdure of stealing checks with a face value of more than $1.5 million from the mail. Montgomery, Alabama – On September 20, 2024, a federal district judge sentenced 44-year-old James Glover, a former postal carrier and resident of Montgomery, Alabama, to 24 months in prison for his involvement in a fraudulent mail theft and bank fraud scheme, announced Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson. Postal carrier pleads guilty after discarding mail in a dumpster

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A Hampton man pled guilty today to improperly destroying mail. According to court documents, on Dec. 9, 2023, Michael Thirkield, 31, a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier, dumped several boxes of mail into a dumpster in the Forest Lake Court area in Newport News. Thirkield did not report to work after that day and left his USPS satchel on his porch with a handwritten note stating, “For the mail carrier.”
