Your One-Stop OIG Shop

Date: 06/12/23 | Category: OIG

Every six months as required by the IG Act, the USPS OIG publishes its Semiannual Report to Congress, or SARC. This report is your one-stop shop to get an overview of our work! Hot off the presses, this year’s Spring SARC details what the OIG has been up to in the first half of this fiscal year.

From October 2022 through March 2023, we completed 58 audits and white papers, which resulted in 131 recommendations and nearly $259 million in financial impact. These reports covered a wide range of topics, such as investment and interest rate risks, supervisor timecard administration, opportunities in the USPS retail network for small businesses, and our work on election mail and peak season preparedness.

We also completed 1,634 investigations, which led to 349 arrests and more than 1,000 administrative actions. Plus, our investigations helped the agency avoid almost $54 million in costs and resulted in $38.5 million in fines, restitution, and recovery, returning more than $12.5 million to the Postal Service. The Spring SARC highlights a few of our investigations into drug trafficking, mail theft, healthcare fraud, and other crimes.

In addition, the SARC describes some of our new undertakings this year, including our new duty to oversee the Postal Regulatory Commission and the launch of our new website! There’s a whole lot to check out. You can read our Spring SARC here or, if you’re short on time, read a two-page summary here. Feel free to leave a comment below on which report or investigation stood out to you the most.
