Putting Our Focus on Hiring at USPS

Date: 05/18/26 | Category: Ideas Worth Exploring

The Postal Service has more than 624,000 employees. Most are career employees with full federal benefits, but more than 93,000 are pre‑career employees, who tend to change jobs more readily as they decide whether working at USPS is right for them. Not surprisingly, this means having a good hiring process is important to ensure postal vacancies are filled on time and new employees are prepared to succeed.

Because hiring is so important to the Postal Service, we’ve issued several reports on hiring issues in recent years. In March, we gathered those reports together to create one of our Focus On features, Focus on Hiring. The goal of our Focus Ons is to provide one page on a specific topic where you can see all of our recent work and the key themes. You can find a list of our other Focus Ons here

Our reports on hiring have looked at the efficiency of USPS’s hiring process, the effort to fill supervisor vacancies, and how well the Postal Service is conducting background screening. We’ve also compared the Postal Service’s recruitment strategies for pre-career employees against best practices in the private and public sectors. Check out all the reports in the new Focus On

Do you have topic ideas for a Focus On feature? Add them in the comments below.

Yeah unfortunately the Post Office terribly managed. It’s brutal for ALL employees, the older generation are used to the abuse. I’m actively looking for a new job. 21.89 to be harassed by management and “regulars”. NO THANKS! The public would be horrified to know what really goes on in the postal field.

I enjoyed the info and I was caught slipping. I was led to believe USPS only hired ex-military people!!! A relative and I will have to keep her name... out.

It is imperative that new employees of the USPS wear some type item to identify them as our employees. In my years as an employee of the USPS, USPIS and contractor for the YSPS OIG I have seen far too many employees dressed inappropriately . Many wore clothing that did not link them to the company.
I suggest that all new hires be mandated to wear USPS provided shirts, jackets ,etc.
It time we kick started the process so that employees looked like the UPS and FEDEX people who serve my community and others.
