Working with our Law Enforcement Partners

Our special agents investigate nationwide internal crimes and fraud committed by postal employees and contractors as well as postal employee misconduct. We work with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and local prosecutors across the country to prosecute these crimes. 

In some instances, we uncover much larger criminal activity being carried out by multiple individuals and organizations. In many of these cases, we partner with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to identify and hold responsible those who take advantage of the public’s trust in our postal system.

Brooklyn Man Indicted in Scheme to Steal Checks and Defraud Banks

NEWARK, N.J. – A Brooklyn, New York, man was charged for his role in a scheme to steal and alter checks from the mail and fraudulently obtain funds from banks by depositing the stolen and altered checks into bank accounts belonging to individuals other than the intended recipients. Postal Service Supervisor Admits Misappropriation of Postal Funds

CAMDEN, N.J. – A Cape May County, New Jersey, man today admitted misappropriating postal funds, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced. Austin T. Mahan pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Christine P. O’Hearn to an information charging him with misappropriating over $1,000 in postal funds. U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited agents of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Field Office, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi.

Former Rochester mail carrier sentenced for stealing mail

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Marlene Cruz, 40, of Rochester, NY, who was convicted of theft of mail matter by officer or employee, was sentenced to serve two years’ probation. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent-in-Charge Northeast Field Office.

Hudson County Woman Charged with Six Burglaries of U.S. Post Offices

NEWARK, N.J. – A Hudson County, New Jersey, woman was arrested today for burglarizing two U.S. Post Offices on six occasions. Zyeama Johnson is charged by complaint with six counts of burglary of a post office. U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited special agents of the U.S. Postal Service, Officer of the Inspector General under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi.

Federal grand jury indicts postal worker for stealing mail

BUFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Christopher Porter, 37, of Angola, NY, with two counts of theft of mail and six counts of delay of mail by a postal employee.
