Working with our Law Enforcement Partners

Our special agents investigate nationwide internal crimes and fraud committed by postal employees and contractors as well as postal employee misconduct. We work with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and local prosecutors across the country to prosecute these crimes. 

In some instances, we uncover much larger criminal activity being carried out by multiple individuals and organizations. In many of these cases, we partner with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to identify and hold responsible those who take advantage of the public’s trust in our postal system.

Granite City Mail Carrier Admits to Stealing from USPS Collection Box

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – A mail carrier employed by the U.S. Postal Service pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing from a collection box in Granite City. Phillip E. Tucker, 37, of Madison, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail by postal employee.

Cape Girardeau Postal Worker Sentenced to Prison for Stealing Mail

CAPE GIRARDEAU – A former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier who both stole and failed to deliver customers’ mail was sentenced Tuesday to 14 months in prison. U.S. District Judge Matthew T. Schelp also ordered Robert Gafford, 34, to pay a $5,000 fine and restitution of $1,605. Gafford of Jackson, Missouri, was convicted by a jury in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau in February of one count of delaying or destroying mail and one count of embezzlement of mail.

Jacksonville, Florida – United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announces the return of an indictment charging Daniel Diaz Garcia (34, Jacksonville) with credit card fraud and theft of mail. If convicted, Diaz faces up to 10 years in federal prison on the credit card fraud charge, up to 5 years in prison on the theft of mail charge, and payment of restitution to the victims in the case. Former Postal Service Letter Carrier Sentenced for Stealing Mail

NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that TIMOTHY MCMILLAN, JR. (“MCMILLAN”), age 43, of New Orleans, was sentenced on July 23, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Brandon S. Long, for stealing items from the mail that he had been entrusted to handle as a postal letter carrier. U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General in investigating this matter.

INDIANAPOLIS- Barry Gallon, 54, of McCordsville, has been sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to theft of mail matter by officer or employee, a felony criminal offense. The United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General investigated this case.
