With three agencies that have “U.S. Postal Service” in their names, and each one having different responsibilities and jurisdictions, it’s no wonder people sometimes aren’t sure where to turn for help with lost, delayed, or damaged mail.

With the Postal Service solely responsible for mail delivery, it’s almost always the one to contact. But some circumstances warrant notifying us here at the OIG, or the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Our blog infographic illustrates the options, with links and contact information below.

Postal Service

  • For delayed mail, either domestic or international, call 1-800-275-8777 to file a complaint. Or go to USPS online, choose the tab marked "Where is My Package" or "Where is My Mail."
  • For lost or damaged mail, file a claim for either international mail or domestic mail.

The OIG

  • File a complaint with our Hotline if you suspect wrongdoing by a postal employee or contractor.

Postal Inspection Service

  • If you suspect someone who does not work for USPS has stolen your mail call (877) 876-2455 or report it online

It really doesn't matter who you contact, nothing will be done except a steady stream of platitudes. I contacted several people at the highest levels of USPS and got nothing. When 2 separate Priority One Day letters get lost going 100 miles, and are not delivered for a week and a half, the only thing that I got was "we are looking into it". I think it is way past time to scrap the whole system, fire everyone from the Postmaster General on down, and start again.

Today October 13, 2020 our mail did not run. Any reason? The next door neighbor put mail in her box to go out last night and at 4:30pm it's still there. Are they not delivering on some days to cut even more costs?

yes i am having the same problem . I put mail out to be picked up and at 7 pm it still had not been picked up. My mail is being put in the next door neighbor mail box instead of mine. What is the problem.

My billings and important letters, even my packages get lost very often recently. Even though it said “delivered”, but the package never arrived. I noticed if the package is quite big, then they should give you a key to open the parcel drop boxes. But there was no key provided. I have some important notice, they should have been arrived, but it’s been more than 2 weeks, still haven’t received it. What can I do?

I typically get mail EVERY day, even if its junk- all too often, I've noticed NOTHING at all arrives- after years of being here, and always getting SOMETHING, even if it's a mailer, what gives?

That depends upon where you are. In many big cities due to COVID quarantines of staff less than half of carriers and other postal workers are reporting to work. Thus it is physically impossible for the remaining staff to get everywhere. Because of the national contract regular carriers are to do their own route first and then spend 4 more hours a day trying to get to vacant routes. In my district it was decided to give priority mail and other parcels, well priority. So every route gets those and about every three days the rotation of carriers working overtime and substitute carriers are able to get to the vacant routes. With COVID social distancing slowing down hiring and drivers training it will be sometime maybe a two week quarantine before regular 6 day a week delivery of letter mail and flats happens for any particular route. Should the worst happen and a carrier doesn't return that route might be in rotation for even longer.

The title of this page is "Where’s My Mail?" You then go on to say "We welcome your comments related to the topic on this page. Complaints about the Postal Service, including lost, stolen or mishandled mail, that are unrelated to the content on this page, will not be posted." Exactly WHAT is the topic of this page if it is NOT "Lost, Stolen, or Mishandled Mail"?????????

Hello, thank you for commenting. The “Pushing the Envelope” blog is an informational platform. The topic of this particular blog is about letting customers know what resources are available that can better assist and address specific concerns. “Where’s My Mail?” is the title of the blog, not the page. As our policy states, we welcome comments that are on topic. We are an independent agency of the Postal Service and cannot help with daily delivery issues. However, if you believe a Postal Service employee or contractor has deliberately lost or stolen mail, please file a complaint with our Hotline by clicking on the red “Report Fraud, Waste, and Abuse” button at the top right corner of this page. Thank you.

What about claims that were insured? Or claims I went to the post office for to verify and that are not getting processed. So, no point in paying insurance, because it does not get paid or processed

Why have a blog which doesn't actually address the question in the title? There seem to be some major delays in some of the bigger hubs across the United States. Why not address that? Is it against some policy for anyone associated with the postal service to speak about these massive delay times? It is pretty obvious when these places are looking to hire hundreds of additional employees, that they are dealing with a fairly large issue in certain locations.

My daughter had to move back with us in March as their room mates believe all what the President and WH stated and therefore did not and continue to disregard CDC guidelines. She had not put a temp address forwarding notice with USPS till recently. When they recently stopped by their Rental house, which they still pay for, the room mates did some nasty stuff. One issue was that their mail was tossed and/or destroyed, know this as their bills were sent to that address (including utility bills and such). My ask is whether there are any laws which are in place protecting intended (addressed to) recipients? If there is, is this a federal law and any suggestions we can pursue? My daughter said that they may have proof of this, but figured I would ask the OIG first if this may be an infringement of federal law. Thanks for your attention.

I moved to a small town in September 2016. After I moved here I found out I had to have a P.O. box, I was given one. I then had to start changing all my addresses at all the business and government offices I have to deal with or receive mail from. I receive Social Security and it is very hard to get changes made at Social Security. So some of my mail from them comes to my PO and some to my home address. Also I have to order some things from Walmart, because it over an hour to the nearest one, and I have spina bifida and am elderly. But when I order from Walmart the ups drivers or fedex drivers will deliver my mail to the post office instead of my home. The post office has now started returning my mail and refusing to put it in my P.O. box. I don't know what to do, I have been working with SS and Walmart to get the address they have to include my P.O. box. But now I wont know if I am missing any important mail or not. What do I do?

I have opened two cases with USPS regarding a lost package. Both times, my case was “open & resolved,” yet my package is still lost and I have heard nothing regarding my cases. I call constantly, but end up on hold for an hour. How do I get my package? I used a prepaid label from Mercari who says it’s insured, yet I can’t file a claim. Please help!!

The post office handles a lot of mail. I think that we as individuals need to do our part to ensure that we get our mail. We make mistakes as well as the post office. We should check ourselves first before we blame them.

What do I do if my mail is repeatedly being put in someone else's mailbox? Thankfully the neighbor has been an honest person and gives me my mail, but sometimes it has been weeks later after it was delivered. Once, one of the mail pieces was an important delivery from the government but because I never received it, I spent much time and stress dealing with that department to figure out what happened, then find out it was actually sent when the neighbor gives it to me days later. It is not my neighbors responsibility to deliver my mail to me. What can I do?

The link you posted for the other person. https://postalpro.usps.com/ppro-tools/consumer-affairs says it could not be found. I was to have received a letter from the IRS yesterday. It didn’t show up. It also didn’t come today. I checked the box yesterday letting the USPS know it did not arrive but got no response. I tried to do a live chat this evening but the agent basically blew me off and told me to wait 7 more days (IRS letters usually want a response right away) then when I was typing a reply the agent ended the chat cause I guess he didn’t want to actually do anything to find the letter. What do I do know?

Mi mb e too. The IRS said, "they could have forwarded because I did a change of address months ago. My check was sent 1 month ago, IRS hasn't received it back and I don't have it. What IDIOTS!!!! I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR USPS

The best thing to do is go to your post office and check to make sure your change of address went through. If so they can speak with the carrier of that route to try to get this resolved for you.

  • anon

Tammy the same thing happened to me I had a old address I tried 2x to change my address the 2x hopefully worked you need to look and see what the address is on your last tax return and then put in a change of address from that house to your new home now and that works before they send it out to you if they send it out and you do it it won't work but you have to change your address before your stimulus check is sent! You can go online and see when your date is on irs.com I hope I could help you

    May 28, 2020
  • anon

A change of address typically takes 7 to 10 business days to go through. The best thing you can do is let the IRS know your current address.
