Understanding Pay at the USPS OIG
-
The USPS OIG recognizes and rewards talent through a modern compensation system that reflects the value of your work. Our pay band structure, locality-based adjustments, and law enforcement premiums ensure fairness, flexibility, and competitiveness across all roles and locations.
-
Pay Bands
The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General uses a pay band structure instead of the traditional General Schedule (GS) pay scale used by many other federal agencies.
There are seven pay bands, and each band is divided into levels that closely align with the federal General Schedule (GS) grades.
-
Locality Pay
In addition to base pay, all USPS OIG employees receive locality pay, which adjusts salaries based on the cost of living in the geographic area where the employee works.

-
Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP)
Eligible law enforcement positions at the USPS OIG qualify for Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP), which is a premium added to the base salary. This reflects the dynamic nature of the role and the need to be available beyond standard hours.
