Delivery of a New Delivery Vehicle

Date: 09/07/20 | Category: Mail Processing & Transportation

When you buy a car, how long do you tend to keep it? A few years? Six or seven? Ten? For the U.S. Postal Service, it’s a long, long time. The backbone of its delivery fleet – more than 200,000 vehicles – is the right-hand-drive Long Life Vehicle (LLV), which has an expected service life of 24 years. But almost 70 percent of the LLVs on urban and rural routes are now between 25 and 32 years old, and maintenance costs are high.

The combined effect of aging vehicles, a growing number of delivery points, and a changing mail mix increases the need for new delivery vehicles to meet the current operational demands of six-days-a-week delivery. That’s why the Postal Service began planning in Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 for acquisition of a new, Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) to start replacing the current fleet beginning in FY 2018 through FY 2019. But due to frequent changes to the NGDV acquisition timeline, the planned deployment date is now scheduled for January 2022.

Our auditors looked at the Postal Service’s acquisition strategy, which uses modeling of current and projected operational data. As noted in their recent report, they found that the strategy was generally adequate, but significant implementation delays arose. USPS management told our auditors that the original timelines were not sufficient and more time was needed to develop and test the prototypes. For example, issuing the Request for Proposal to suppliers for the NGDV prototype vehicle took six months longer than initially planned due to extensive stakeholder briefings.

We recommended the Postal Service’s Vice President, Delivery Operations, coordinate with the Acting Vice President, Engineering Systems, to perform a schedule risk assessment of the NGDV production timeline to evaluate the risk of further delays and determine whether modification to the mixed vehicle acquisition strategy is warranted. Management agreed.

Do you remember when the Postal Service last transitioned to a new vehicle in the late 1980s/early 1990s? What did you think then of the Jeep being replaced by the LLV? What do you remember when you saw the first Postal Service LLV?

Let's see what they decide, stick with oil or move with the times and go electric. For all their green posts on social media I would expect them to. From this decision we will see if there are any big brained people left at the usps who will get things done and save money$$$

Presidential candidates likely using the contract as a chess piece in their game. Even if it's not announced by 11:59 tonight, I'm not stressed. USPS are bigger procrastinators than all of us combined. It will come in due time.

Atleast announce before fiscal year ends On Sept 30 that when you are announcing the contract.

What is the point in dragging and delaying till the last minute and forever and ever.
If this is the speed of working and decisioning no work horse or rocket will bring agility to USPS.
Someone needs to bring agility in decisioning, USPS can set example of transformation for other orgs.

Transformation, agility adoption delayed is transformation denied.

I like several millions of investors have invested in Workhorse Group as we believe they are the future of EV and USPS stands to gain a lot and save a lot of money in terms of maintenance, parts, labor and fuel. Also it will boost USPS operational efficiency > 300% and give a giant headstart over the private competitors like UPS, FedEX in the EV Delivery space. Sir, Please award the NGDV Contract to Workhorse before end of FY2020.

Seriously bros, just announce a winner to your Next-Gen Delivery Vehicle competition already! Its been 5 years since the USPS started the process and you are still dragging your feet on picking a winner. You are just making the post office look bad while your 30 year old gasoline vehicles keep bursting into flames every week. Terrible look for you guys. Post Office needs to get their act together and announce a winner so these new vehicles can actually start going into production. Go with clean energy. Problem solved. Just get it done bros.

There are millions of investors like me who invested in the future tech EV companies Like workhorse. As they have a good chance. Also we assumed the USPS decision will come out before the deadline and fiscal year end. As per the public information. We will loose our investments if there is no announcement before the Deadline. Hope the news is announced before the deadline and we all get good return on invent like USPS could get in terms of savings agility competitive edge and location data.

Can anyone tell me for sure are the funds already been made available for the new trucks. I heard that they were made available earlier in the year, but now I am hearing that they are waiting for the republicans and I hear they are not going to pass this. I am not sure if people are talking about I thought funds were made available but apparently not.

I’m happy to hear that USPS will replace their outdated fleet with environmentally friendly and efficient electric vehicles. Additionally, purchasing EVs from Workhorse-an American company that will put American factories and workers to use in the heartland will be amazing. Way to support American innovation. Battery technology is growing exponentially, oil and conventional energy resources are depleting. Million mile batteries could be a reality and common in coming years. These batteries could be replaced with the existing ones at a fraction of a price of savings from ICE and Hybrids.

Can you please explain why you keep allowing our fellow Americans put themselves in danger with driving unsafe vehicles? Why doesn't Trump and Dejoy want to buy brand new electric trucks from Workhorse? Why don't they want to save our environment and help create American jobs. Do they really only think of themselves? Why would you not want to create great news right now for the postal service?
