We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue. 

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations. 

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse. 

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work. 

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring. 
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints. 

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package.     First of all the JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER has a very serious problem of mail being stolen from that facility I plan to organize a group to test those high ups at that facility as it is my belief there are many involved in organized crime specifically taking place at the JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Packages are stamped in Time stamped labels are pulled and to hide the thefts these labels are then scanned with 0:00 time stamps for several days to hide these thefts from those who mailed the packages. furthermore packages especially Media Mail are cut open to figure out the value then pilfered and boxes from large shipments of new merchandise are stamped using this 0:00 time stamp system to hide the tracks of the thieves. I am calling for the resignation of all in charge and a new batch of supervisory people picked by a government security agency be installed. Just from the sheer number of complaints of pilfering and theft my guess is that millions of dollars worth of merchandise is stolen from the mail. The Inspector General has turned a blind eye to the theft. It is time to organize an outside group to check on the Inspector General as it is suspicious as to why he refuses to deal with the massive theft and pilfering of both Foreign and American Mail at this facility. He is not only not doing his job, but he seems not to take theft seriously, is it because he is part of this money making machine? I am calling for a Federal Investigation of the current inspector General and I will not stop until he contacts me and tells me why he is not dealing with massive theft. I have files of online complaints. I have started accumulating e-mails and I intend to start a YouTube and Facebook campaign through Social zmedia to point the finger at this useless Inspector General. I intend asking for his resignation and I intend to use the Federal Government for investigating him as I believe he is profiting from what if’s going on as there is no other reason why no attempt is made to put a stop to these thefts.

    WORST customer service I have ever had, impossible to find out how to contact them about an "undeliverable" package, (a million clicks to get a simple customer service phone number) if you email customer service, hope you have some time on your hands with the 5 pgs of information when all they really would need to help you is an address name phone # and tracking #). Spent an hour trying to help the robot on the phone (that will not accept any answer or help you reach a human that can actually DO something about your mail) understand what i was saying, and then the wait time was 1 hr 30 minutes. Wouldnt you think if the package was undeliverable they would contact you, and try to work with you to redeliver it?

    USPS Regional Facility GREENSBORO NC DISTRIBUTION CENTER is having severe irregularities in getting mail to where it should be . Packages will get there then this facility will send them back to where the package originated from. The packages ( and other mail ) once arriving in this center are getting misdirected on a more than often basis and in instances lost forever . I feel there needs to be some serious investigations into the handling of mail at this facility asap !!

    My package seems to be sitting in ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) since 15th March. According to the USPS tracking page, it has already cleared customs. USPS claim to have not received it yet. Can you explain to me why it is taking so long to be transferred from the processing facility to the USPS? I understand that you will not go and find a lost package but I would at least like some information on whether it could be lost or if it is normal for your customs to not bother sending on the parcels that arrive there. The USPS customer service is unhelpful and an utter disgrace to the USA. The representatives should be better trained in how to handle unhappy customers.

    I contacted the Post Office in Tracy CA because I had a delivery going to wrong address. I wanted to give them a heads up to catch it for me and send it to the correct address. They were spot on with a follow up phone call and sending me my package.

    I found a delivery notice on my door Monday... signed it and put in my mailbox for delivery the next day. it was ignored, although I did receive other mail. I logged into the USPS.co/redelivery site and set up a rediverly for today... post person was here, no delivery) I tried repeatedly to call and get a live person on the phone at both the main number ((1-800-275-8777) told hold time would be over an hour).. and the local post office (14910 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618) number (813) 908-3478 (no answer... ever... called 10-15 times) - the tracking number on the delivery slip is apparently not recognized by your system either...5293058031391287. So far, no delivery, no person to speak to... and I cannot take the time to drive to the post office and wait an hour in line. So far, not thrilled with the customer service I have received. Currently listening to hold music... yes, trying to call USPS again, and get someone on the line. Been 20 minutes so far... was told this call that it would be 1 hour 20 minutes... HELP! It should not be this difficult!

    I have a package mailed out from United Kingdom on the 6th of March, arrived in San Francisco International Distribution Center on the 7th and left SFO on the 9th 236am arriving Los Angeles Distribution 1228pm on the 9th (same day). It left Los Angeles USPS on the 10th "In Transit to Next Facility". The last USPS tracking update was on the 12th of March "In Transit to next Facility" . How can it take only 2 days from United Kingdom to SFO but it has been more than a week to get from SFO to my house?????

    I am ONCE AGAIN having "delivery issues" with my mail, Today a package was JAMMED into my box along with crushing it the carrier also crushed letters by JAMMING the package into a space too small for all to fit properly. Also a second package was not delivered as the carrier was TOO LAZY to walk down my driveway which is exactly 90ft from my rural box. It is OUTRAGEOUS that I have to do a postal workers job of package pickup & delivery yet I DO NOT get paid by USPS to do THEIR job. I am NOT asking for something special or extra, I simply WANT MY MAIL delivered in a timely & proper manner.

    Click and Ship has been down for months. I get the error message "Sorry, your transaction has been declined. Your transaction cannot be processed at this time with this payment type." I tried two different cards (Visa, Discover) and PayPal. Nothing works. I've had this problem the last few times I've tried to ship things through Click and Ship, dating back into the Fall of 2017.

    I just had the worst customer service experience of my life with the USPS. All I wanted to do was call my local post office (Saco, Maine) to ask a question about a package being delivered to my home. I spent half an hour trying to navigate the automated phone service and when I finally got to the point where it should connect me to a representative, the automated voice told me the wait time was an hour and fifty minutes. I hung up and went through the whole menu again to see if there was a mistake. Nope, I was again told there was an hour and fifty minute wait time. Seriously? The exact same wait period? Who is waiting on the line for two hours? I just want to ask a question. I will never use USPS if I can avoid it. I am not surprised the USPS continues to lose money.

    I am also adding the same issues in Coppell. I order glaucoma eye drops from a mail order pharmacy in Florida. 2 mths ago they sent my package to mcKinney from Coppell in error . It took approx 3 weeks to get my package and this is an issue as you CANNOT miss a day on glaucoma treatment. And once again I am waiting on a package from same shipper today and it has been sitting on Coppell since the 7th with the delivery date still showing the 10th!! I called them and they told me it was a problem with the package - not available for acceptance ( Whatever that means!) She was rude and NO HELP!!! they really have an issue here!!!!!!

    I was just at the Post Office and left feeling very discouraged. I wanted to mail a children's book to my grandson in Germany. The book weighs 14 ounces, the price to mail was over $23.00! How unfortunate that the cost of postal services is almost out of reach. I have always encouraged my family to use the postal services and keep people working. Now, I understand why they decide to use to email, and pay for monthly bills online, the cost is much less. I can't believe it cost over $20.00 to mail a $6.00 book. Perhaps you can explain why. I am sure I am not the only one mailing packages internationally. In the future, I will just have my son buy the book in Germany and I will electronically send him money, way cheaper.

    Hello USPS, I just had a pleasant experience at North Kingstown. The Mobile Unit was set up so that I could buy a card to send as well as 20 stamps. This saved me a lot of time, and the postal worker also pointed out the additional services that are available at the Mobile Unit. This morning was busy in North Kingstown because we had 12 inches of snow yesterday and few people were out. One person that was out was the local carrier. So even as the snow had accumulated 6 or 7 inches, the little USPS mail truck was delivering my mail Thank you for the new service as well as the ongoing mail delivery. Sincerely yours, Jim Ganung

    I pick up our company mail at the USPS Baseline Rd Location in Little Rock Arkansas. Is there some reason why that the Lobby cannot be opened at 6:00AM in the mornings? I cannot explain to you how many times that I either have to call or walk around to the side door at 7:00 to 7:30AM to ask them to open the front door. Now if I call the regular number I get voice mail or it goes to and automated 800 number. This is VERY time consuming thing that I have to do. How ever I have the solution. Give me a key to the Lobby and the Post Master won't have to worry about it any more. I am sure that this email will not cause any changes to be made but it would be nice if they would PLEASE open the door at 6:00AM as advertised. Thanks

    I have reviewed the USPS ASM Chapter 25 on Tort Claims and 39 CFR Part 912, and I’m still unable to find where to file a property damage claim since my local post office is now choosing to ignore me and not respond. My carrier severely damage my mailbox and post, lied about how it happened, agree to pay for it, and once a paid receipt for the identical replacement of what was just purchased in May 2017 was provided to her supervisor, they both stopped communicating with me. How does this get resolved when the Martinsburg post office either won’t answer the phone, answers and places you on hold for 45 minutes, yep, i just laid down my phone as i did computer work at my job and i disconnected the call after 45 min, the line at the actual post office is never less than 10-20 people with just one person working when there are 3 desks, or the carrier’s supervisor now refuses to answer your emails? This is the same carrier who scribbled on a certified letter slip “24cents postage due”, takes the 24 cents and never delivers the letter until a month later i literally chase her down the street and tell her i have reported her for theft of US mail and 24 cents to the OIG ( the letter, that she claimed was lost, appears in the mailbox THE NEXT DAY!)

    I applied for a passport today at the Lincoln Post Office. I didn't have a Birth Certificate, so I had a long list of documentation. The lady that waited on me and the other gentleman employee were very professional and courteous. The USPS needs more people like them. The Postal Service should instruct their employees how to handle people who don't originally have the required information for a passport and not arbitrarily dismiss them.

    You have the worst phone automatized service, any answer at all. I needed to yelled the answer and the automatized system kreps reapeating the same I don't get it. Revise it because millions of people use your services and you eill get more bad reviews, unfortunately we deoend in your services and perhaps it gives you the comfirt of providing ugly phone customer services. Try yourself a call and you see what customer as us we have to deal with US Post Office. Bad, very bad services.

    Amen!! You can’t have an issue with your carrier unless you have a tracking number. Press the number for issue with carrier and the first thing you have to enter is a tracking number. When she steals postage due and didn’ tell you what it was to begin with or she rips your mailbox off its post...where the hell do you get a tracking number to get any further on the call....you don’t, it just hangs up on you for not entering a tracking number!! BEYOND HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!

    No Stars for Click-n-Ship! I've been having this problem with USPS website for over a year. (maybe over 2 or 3, long time, can't remember when began) Tried several cc and paypal, no success. Even bought new computer with windows 10. Tried different browsers, etc. Transaction not able to finalize at this time.... every time! Have had to use Paypal multiple shipping option to print labels at home but that will only work for domestic mail. Need to ship something overseas and makes me livid to have to make special trip, stand in long line, waste my time and postal clerk time to mail a simple small package. Outrageous! FIX THIS PROBLEM! Been broken for beyond too long.

    If the post office plans on staying in business then i think you might wanna work on your employees that just take advantage of the pay and having to show up for work. Downtown omaha office has people calling in 2-3 times a week because they know with the night differential and the daily overtime they get to work makes sure there paychecks are the same but not working many hours.

    Our business ships thousands of (3oz) first class mail bubble envelopes and hundreds of priority mail pkgs annually. I have had very little issues except in two areas. 1. Los Angeles CA Distribution Center. I ship a lot to southern CA and most packages make it to their destination, (6) six instances now where the package had been "delayed" for sometimes 2-3 weeks in tracking once it either hits this distribution center or after it leaves, most specifically to LONG BEACH, CA and never recovered. I understand this is a large facility and your odds go up of having an undelivered package especially the more you send but it's becoming a trend, enough where my business has had to change it's shipping practices to requiring priority mail to socal only if contents are over $50 (never had an issue with priority mail). Six times does not seem like a lot, but it makes my business look bad, it's an overall loss and time waster having to put in lost mail requests. I've even gone so far as to change the name on my "from" label so it does not show a jewelry business. 2. Athens, GA area, they make it to their destination, but are ripped open like they got stuck on machinery and accidentally opened and the contents 'fell out' somewhere, contents removed and retaped, sent empty with an oops sticker. This was more specifically in Aug-Sept of 2016 and have not had a recent issue but am including this if others have also reported it.

    I don’t know who to contact. I have been with the post office in CA since July 1979. I had been rec’g packages at home until the post office made a contract with fedex for delivering packages. I do not have home delivery that was decided by the post office now I don’t get deliveries from FedEx or post office. Even after I paid the $26 @ the P O.

    Mailed a priority envelope package from elk grove ca to Los angeles. Ups priority and USPS took it on Feb 19th said it will arrive in 2-3days. $17.23 to mail it. It has been stuck in delay at Los Angeles distribution center since 2/22/18 . Called main number and goes straight to voice mail and hangs up. I need answers. Ive contacted inspector general and also waited on hold with usps for an hour and all i get is sorry its delayed and will be late. No eta when it will arrive. These are time sensitive documents. Seriously.

    You certainly do NOT put your employees safety first...how dare you post that??? My son in law is at this minute delivering mail during a blizzard on poorly maintained rural roads.The Post Office needs to shut down during bad weather or at least keep the rural carriers off the roads.The excuse I always hear is people get medicine through the mail...plan ahead in the winter.As far as checks by mail,if the roads are bad are people really going to risk going out to cash a check??? You people running the Post Office need to go out and physically deliver the mail during a storm...my bet is you could never do it and would never want a loved one doing it. Start putting people before money....and maybe pay the ones who actually do the work more than the ones who sit at desks giving orders.

    My package has been returned from China to US. Since the day its returned from China, it travelled around US twice, still did not come back to my mailing address. I called USPS inspector hotline many times, created case and request to return to my mailing address. However, no action has been taken by USPS, now the package is in Jacksonville FL and prepared to send to destination China where it is returned from! Please return my package as request in the shipping receipt.

    One of my mail carriers (I have multiples) throws my mail on my porch/steps instead of walking up to put it in the mailbox. I've submitted many, many complaints, via USPS contact us, and it is still allowed to go on. I've had 2 supervisors come to my house to assess the situation. First, my flowering clematis vine was encroaching on the porch (it's on my railing) and there was only a 3.5 foot clearance up the steps (enough for UPS to deliver 30lb packages) but, not for my mail carrier. So, I tied the vine back for more access. Then, the bush on the other side was in the way (it stuck out 3 inches past the railing. I trimmed it back. Then it was they couldn't find my mail box, and I was told by the supervisor "if the mail box isn't visible from the street, it's allowable to set the mail on the porch. Now the latest (coming from the mouth of the guilty carrier) "your porch is a hazard". Why? I haven't a clue. I find this unbelievable that bank/financial statements can be left out in the elements, often times blowing off the porch. I've given up on contacting the post office as they seem to ignore the situation. I would like a response as to whether this is acceptable.

    I'm concerned about the priority that Amazon packages receive over priority and first class. Amazon packages ALWAYS get to me in 2 days, but if my brother sends me a gift from CA, it NEVER makes it by the time frame, usually shows up weeks later. This don't fair and we see who comes first in the USPS world.... MONEY!

    You wonder why the USPS is going broke. Let me tell you why; We have a business that get packages delivered to our place by the USPS & we were not getting them. I complained to our local office & was told the reason we did not receive anything was because we no longer had a box. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT? I have a 911 address & that's all that should matter. All the carrier would need to do is drive up the paved drive & put on porch. But NO can't do that as there is no box out front. This is part of our regulations if there is not a box there is to be no packages left. They would have not fit in the box but we don't have a box so I can't deliver. That's fine I will get UPS or FEDEX to do it & you guy will loose more money. I don't know who makes your policy but whoever it is should be ashamed! If your carrier can't find an address with out a box in front then they should not be delivering mail out in the country. Shame on you guys. If you would work with the people that use you more people would use the USPS. How do you think UPS & FEDEX took all your business? It's called customer service & you DON'T give it!

    I'm sorry but you make no sense. You have a 911 address? You mean you have an address? USPS isn't going broke because you can't handle receiving your mail. You should put up an approved locking mail box down at the street. If anything they're going broke because a bunch of whiners aren't able to get their mail and just complain all the time that they're not getting white glove service from the people who deliver everything to every home in America. I think USPS looses money by taking your packages actually, not by you not doing business with them. At least for first class mail it costs more than the stamp and is subsidized. So stop complaining that your junk mail isn't delivered on a silver platter and the mail carrier is too lazy after walking up 3 mountains before your house everyday for the last 25 years of their life. No you need your mail in your favorite spot on the porch and hopefully some tea for your reading pleasure. Get real lady.

    The Cornelius PO is excellent. The staff greet everyone with a smile. They are helpful and quick and more efficient than the Davidson PO. My overseas mail gets there in 5 days whereas at the DavidsonPO it may be 10 days or more. The people in the Davidson office do not like to serve people. One gets the feeling that they are doing you a favor waiting on you-sour faces. I would fire the lot, but that is impossible. They are watching their pensions. I go to Cornelius regularly although I live in Davidson. 5 stars for Cornelius and their excellent work.

    I am trying to receive a package sent to me from Long Island, NY. I live in Central Georgia. My local post office is Byron with mail coming from the Fort Valley Post Office. After reaching Atlanta, GA this package was sent on to Orlando, FL (no one can explain why, I have asked). After sitting there awhile and after I complained it was moved back to Macon (which is correct) but rather than sent it on to Fort Valley for delivery they sent it out to Jeffersonville, GA. I talked to whoever is in charge of that post office and he checked the bar code (its fine) so he has no idea how he ended up with it today. Now he's sending back to Macon and says if they do everything right I might get it on Saturday. I was originally scheduled for delivery last Monday. This is becoming an unfortunate but routine thing for mail it seems. The last package (both where sent First Class) took 17 days from the date of mailing to reach me as it bounced all over the Southeast from Distribution Center to Distribution Center and an incorrect post office also (a couple of centers saw it more than once and the incorrect post office in that case was Pine Mountain, GA). I wish the people sending me the packages would switch to another carrier. I am tired of the ridiculously long mail times AND I am tired of the dressing down I get whenever I call the 1-800-ask-usps to complain.
