We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue. 

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations. 

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse. 

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work. 

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring. 
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints. 

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package.     today I needed to contact my local post office with the following issue: I sent a package with my roommate to be mailed. She dropped it into the Hearthwood, vancouver WA postoffice. What she didn’t' realize is, there was no postage on the package. I'd asked her to take it to the post office to mail it, which she did. She didn't realize I meant to take it inside and buy stamps. I've tried find out what the pickup times are for the boxes at this PO but so far have been unsuccessful. Can we get this very important package back???? What will happen to it? I spent an hour surfing your website trying to find a way, any way to contact you. Here I am, over an hour later and I'm still on hold. You need to UPDATE your website and phone system. You have the most unfriendly incompetent communication system I've ever seen. Even the IRS has a better, more approachable, easy to understand system than you do. In this day an age I know you can do better. Thanks a lot for NOTHING

    I was supposed to have a Prescription deliver to me from the VA, and USPS is saying it was deliver but I never got it? I cannot talk to anyone and I need my pills. I called VA and they told me I had to file a claim with USPA and when I try to fill it out it keeps saying my address is not valid? Really Please help me.

    We and many in our business ship a lot of International packages. First, packages going into China are increasingly not getting scanned for tracking, nor are they scanned consistently on delivery. (Its gotten very bad in the last year) Which is resulting in fraudulent claims for refunds for non delivery of goods. We have no way of proving the items were delivered. China has to be gotten on board with this by scanning effectively. Second WHY? do we always have to sign for International Packages coming here, but the USPS has no reciprocity requirement for signatures for US packages destined outside of the US? Many payment services for Internation purchases DO NOT Accept "scanned delivery confirmation" as proof of delivery for items over $750. They require "SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION" only. Lets get going on this stuff.

    Please take all necessary steps to fully restore Postal Saving System and add a lending service component. For the sake of extending critically-needed, reliable, and low-interest banking services in all ZIP codes, this is a no-brainer. Also, as an American who knows the value of a maintaining a (semi)-public postal service, USPS banking may be the best option to ensure continued revenue that sustains traditional postal services.     A US postal worker in Keller, TX hit a vehicle 4/25/18 and drove off. Looked like a female driver of the USPS truck. USPS driver got out of vehicle and picked up fender and placed inside back of truck then sped off leaving the vehicle that was hit. The CRIMINAL UNITED STATES POSTAL WORKER did not stop to check on the person they hit to see if the person was alright. Disgusting behavior! I hope the police find that USPS driver and make an arrest!!! Hit and run is illegal and immoral.

    after a recent visit to my post office, I tried to to use the QR code printed on the receipt to leave a comment about the good service always provided by one particular clerk. It didn't work uspsci.allegiancetech.com/blah.blah might be temporarily down or moved to a new address.. Really? I'm trying to be surprised, but it's not working. Instead, I'm wondering how much this boondoggle cost the taxpayers. Btw, am I paying for *this* website too??? smh...

    I just want to say that I loved the beautiful scenery stamps the USPS had this summer, in the sheet called "O Beautiful," and I would really love it if you brought those back again. They had so many pretty colors on the stamps that I could always find a stamp from that set to match my various address labels. They were lovely stamps, and I really hope you bring them back again or do another set like them in the future. I buy a lot of stamps all throughout the year; hundreds of dollars worth. And I really like it when they are pretty and uplifting and colorful and can match the cards/letters/address labels/stickers that I send. Thank you for considering this request for future stamp releases. :)

    I've had a package that has been at ISC New York since April 7th. This is unacceptable, trying to get this figured out has been a nightmare. When I call to file a case I'm told its being held there at customs but according to the USPS it is NOT customs. Where is my package and how can we resolve this issue? Why is it being held captive??? Please help!

    My package was reported according to tracking to have arrived from Thailand at JFK on 4/7, it is now 4/19 and there hasn't been an update since! Nearly 2 weeks yet my home address is merely 15 miles away. How long does the USPS hold parcels in customs before they are released for delivery? My package has no meat, dairy, insects, or any other live or dead organic matter just a plastic part for my auto restoration project.

    Guys, your service has really gotten bad recently. Almost every day I get other peoples mail and other people get my mail. Last year, three of my monthly financial statements from one financial institution did not make it to me -- at least directly. Enough that I went to e-delivery because I just could not trust the USPS to delivery important mail properly anymore. And just in the last month, two package orders have gotten lost -- not even making it to my local post office. This is the last time I will use USPS for package deliveries too. No wonder why your volumes are going down.

    Hello, Can someone pls check why a registered International package from India has not reached me here in NJ? I am told by Indian postal service that it has reached USPS already. Here is the tracking # RO842982068IN. USPS thinks it is waiting for custom clearence. What happened to that package & when will it be delivered? if it is with Customs then can someone pls process & release it asap so that it can be delivered ?

    The "distribution center" in San Francisco is a disgrace. I mailed a package to Hawaii from New York, and the package disappeared after arriving at this center. Weeks have passed with no updates. From the barrage of complaints here, I can see that this happens to many, many people. Packages simply disappear from the San Francisco center, and the Post Office takes no responsibility. This is shameful. No wonder the USPS struggling. It can't do its job and deliver a package.

    still on hold after being told my wait time would be between 20 and 30 minutes. its been 50 minutes and counting*. Just trying to find out why a mailperson would deliver a package, that requires a signature, to someone signing as "MAILBOX", and the package not with whom it was intended. this is the second package "delivered" that never has shown up. I thought mail theft was a felony. *i'm hoping, since it's now past closing time that i'll not be on hold until morning...with no warning.

    it is impossible to get through to anybody within the usps sytem. i have sent an item insured to italy jan 08 2018. the package is in Verona, but keeps constantly 'redirected'. even the addressee cannot intercept anymore. trying to resolve this issue has lead me to month long circles, within the website, the clerks, and via phone. I even tried to contact / phone, and Skpe with Italian postal service. this is an insured item. nobody appears to be able to even connect me with the appropriate contact! super frustrating. i have made a claim online, but prefer the item! making a claim appears to be the only way to find a resolve. how can i find help? christina washington

    I don't understand what the problem is with the Atlanta Metro distribution Center. I sent a package overnight to Logansville, GA, which is very close to Atlanta. Package was to be delivered on Saturday but since it arrived at the distribution center in Atlanta, nothing else has happened with it. No updates since 7:50 AM on Saturday. Inspector General, you need to do some serious investigation on this facility. This is ridiculous. This was a very important package and if not delivered by tomorrow, I'm contacting my congressman. I'm over this with your facility.

    Hearing from somebody that actually work there is impossible. Everything is automatic from the phone call to email. You would be able to get a lot more things delivered to their owners if they could actually contact you. I think the whole program of MRC need to be re-evaluated. Also when you do actually speak to somebody their customer service skills suck!

    wow all these people with unresolved.Well it takes a little effort to send an email and request a callback i did this today about a package mark delivered not received . i got a call back in an hour on a Saturday from my local branch manager who is taking care of it usps is awesome never had an issue people dont realize that millions of letters and pkgs are delivered everyday law of averages are in effect you cant beat all in all usps does a steller jobs thank you usps

    I am now completing over 4 hrs on the phone to the 800 number and our local Hollister CA post office. All I want is my priority express parcel delivered!!!! It was due yesterday and we rearranged our schedule and then waited all day... the carrier NEVER even took it out of the office and left the peach notice in the box. WORSE YET - there was also a priority express flat that they delivered to the door! HELLO out there! Do you have any common sense?

    I have a letter that made it's way from Munich in a couple days. shows being received in ISC New York on 25 March 2018. put in for updates about 2 April, submitted a complaint on 7 April. no response. no further update, either. today is the 12th. absolutely horrific. I can get items through Chicago in two days. unfortunately, we cannot direct mail through specific sites.

    My wife and I have not been getting SOME our mail for the last 3 years, we been struggling everyday ever since. It would go to a different address. Our lives have been turned upside ever since this happened. We have been dealing with the UPS customer service outline for 2 yrs and still the same issues have been logged but no difference was made. I am preparing to hiring a lawyer for this issue, personal document have been lost and now my children. Please forward this to the Office of Inspector General.

    i pay the same postalfees as do those posting to Me but My service is that of a third world Country-I am 71 yo reciding in rural Wi -I have a chronic pain condition and in recent years My box is moved to 0.7 miles away and My postal servive 8 miles from 3miles and only open until 11:30 am: Although I maintain My drivers licence I can not lawfully drive unless I stop My multiple medications for 6-8 hrs prior-I can not there for get My mail routinely nore post an outgoing letter without incurring s great deal of pain, one of the worst is entering the car door: Any packages over size I must make the 16 mile trip: most of My medications also arrive by USPS: upon asking for relief the " Post Master" (Ashland) plays word games sith Me as to what His Sir name is as well as that of His Supervisor and refuses to provide Me with Her phone #-Too, He refuses to provide , to Me in writing , per USPS Policy whybI can not have My box within reasonable walking distance as do all six (6) residences on dead end roads near Me : He will not provide Me with the proper form work to accomplish this within the USPS-This purported because I have a drivers license that I must have to go to Physicians appointments-I have contacted but My US Senator but no apparent advocacy is deemed proper: Am I unreasonable : Am I to injure / kill myself or someone else to somunicate through the USPS? Do I deserve more service For the $ forwarded for services -Help Someone

    I sent an international package to Ghana early this year. When the the receiver went to get it, she was told one otem, that was a cell phone had been stolen from on arrivalt. She was given a form that said the item was stolen before the package got to them and that I should make a complain to usps which I did. I later received an email from usps that the package was delivered. The package was delivered but one item stolen. Am I entitled to a refund or who should I talk to about this.

    I am a self-employed CPA in Worthington, MA and I have noticed a serious decline in the timeliness of mail going to and from the Boston area. I used to get regular mail from Boston overnight in years past but now it takes weeks to get packages. One package sent from Cambridge with the correct zip code on it (clearly written) was sent on March 6th and didn't get to me until after April 1st!! Imagine. Other packages going the other direct (Worthington to Quincy) were sent on March 24th and as of April 9th are still not delivered.

    Sent a package on 03/27/18 to arrive in time for my grandsons birthday. According to the PO i sent it from and the tracking number it would be deliver 3 DAYS before his birthday. Nope been sitting in the Springfield MA Distribution Center for 4 DAYS and will not be delivered in time for his birthday. Very disappointed and looking at all the comments this seems to be an ongoing issue. Springfield MA Distribution Center needs to step it up and make sure customers packages are getting delivered in a timely manner. This is unacceptable.

    Apparently, the Click n ship issue has been going on since 2009. Why on earth has it not been fixed by now? It is very frustrating!! I have used different computers, every browser out there and and every form of payment I have and still payment is declined. And it is NOT me or my payment methods. They are all good.

    There is nothing more unprofessional than a worker who is on his phone/earpiece everytime I see him in my lobby. Today I held the door for him and not even a thank you. I had to chase him back out to ask about a missing package that I know he delivered 2 days ago. I asked, you delivered a box on Tuesday right? He simply shook his head no and got in his truck and drove off. SO SORRY to interrupt your conversation! It must be more important than doing your job or being honest with your customers. I can't believe that USPS allows their employees on their phone. Every worker in the last 3 years has just been on the phone non-stop not to be bothered by anyone. Now they are lying to my face! It's getting to the point that I am willing to pay double for my shipping just so that I don't have to deal with this nonsense.

    Would love to comment and voice my concerns once again. March 14th shipped a total of 16 items with USPS. Over 10 so far have not been delivered. We try to contact managers at USPS where items have been dropped off for proper weight, talk to anyone on the phone at the 800 number (which is useless you can not get anyone). The blame game is non stop as to who is responsible for this mess. Delays, lost of items and theft are a major concern when it comes to 16 items and over 10 lost into thin air. As for the Brooklyn office, not sure they respond either. USPS should change their slogan to USPS we do not deliver for you!!!!!!! But we help ourselves to items we like and say they are delayed or lost, with tracking and First Class Mail.
