We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue. 

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations. 

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse. 

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work. 

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring. 
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints. 

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package.     Sent a package priority to Japan. Been sitting in Chicago for 8 days. After no satisfaction or answer from calling went to post office and talked to a supervisor. Package suddenly moved from distro center to O'Hare for transport. Is there a way to get reimbursed.

    Is it standard practice to deny Passport services 20 minutes before closing now......there's a reason why the USPS is losing money. Completely ridiculous, lazy federal government workers.....especially in a post office that is the size of a shoe box and should be closed because there is another post office 2 miles away!! zip code 04441 and 04442

    why did the post office in town remove the drive up drop off postal box which is located outside the post office. Older citizens and the disabled were able to drop off their mail easily. Now it is difficult for some to be autonomous especially in the winter. You cannot imply that in a large town, we would not benefit by this service. Additionally, the parking is inadequate. Many people in town are upset by this. What is the reason for their removal???

    Hello, I would like to know who sorts the mail where I live. Every so often I order samples. I send one to my address and the other to my mothers. Which ever place who sorts for her, does a good job and she always gets the samples. I on the other hand have just moved from Bellingham, and I'm guessing its the same sorting place, ( because they never made it there either ) as my samples to my new address never make it here. EVER. Especially if they have a product name on them like keurig or Dunkin donuts. I know my mailman and postmaster here, and they are THE BEST. So I know its not them. Isn't stealing illegal? Or tampering? Thanks for listening. I have written to someone before, but I'm not sure who. juli

    I've had a package that's been at the Allen Park distribution center in Michigan since April 21st 2018. Today is June 15th 2018 and I still don't have my package. USPS has done absolutely NOTHING to get it to me. USPS confirmed it did arrive at the Allen Park facility but no package. A prime example of Government employee's making good money to do NOTHING!!!!

    Hello. When I need to contact USPS regarding an issue, I have found that my usual wait time to speak to a customer service representative is 25-35 minutes. This is and egregious amount of time to wait to speak with someone. When contacting UPS the average wait time is 1-3 minutes. When contacting FedEx, the average wait time is less than 5 minutes. Something needs to be done regarding this amount of time a customer is expected to wait on the line to resolve an issue. The estimated wait time is often exceeded by 5-10 minutes as well.

    The mail person leaves the wrong mail in my mailbox at least 3 times a week. On some days a receive mail for two different addresses. I also missed mail in several instances which I assume was dropped off at the wrong address.What do you do when your mail person consistently delivers mail to the wrong location? This issue has been going on for years.

    Worst customer service ever! Package was supposed to be here a week ago and there has been no tracking updates. I’ve called the Paramount, CA post office but no one ever answers. Ever!!! Not in the morning or afternoon. I’ve been calling them for 3 days. I’ve also been calling the main USPS number and after several days I have finally been given the option to speak to an agent. I was quoted 30-45 minutes and have been on hold for over an hour. Can there AT LEAST be a call back option? Maybe let me know my number in the queue? Ridiculous!!!!!

    THE 60625 Q AUXILARY STATION... IS HORRIBLE THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THE TIME SCHEDULE AS POSTED ON THERE DOOR..     Your customer service is atrocious. I was told the wait time is 1 hour... I have now been on hold for 1.5 hours and counting. I tried to avoid this hassle by calling my local post office directly but guess what! I tried 5 times at different points in the morning and the phone was never picked up. Either you are EXTREMELY understaffed or you really do not care about customers. Such a waste of time.

    I see you have lots of complaints especially at Christmas. This is June 8th. My rural mail carrier is refusing to deliver my mail without cause. No note, no knock in the door, nothing. I have been to the post office 3 times in the past two weeks to pick up my mail and inform management, and was assured my mail would be delivered. I adjusted the height of my mailbox to regulation per postmistress' suggestion. No mail. I had an Amazon out for delivery per USPS tracking and received an email notification the following day that the delivery was delayed. Again, no cause and no ETA. I am a 60y/o woman living alone, a veteran and retired RN. I am in fear of this carrier going "POSTAL" because of the random and unjustified behavior and that the post office manager is not resolving the problem. Perhaps the facility is also concerned by her actions. A drug test or psych eval may be indicated. See something, say something. I was on duty in Las Vegas when a crazy person shot into a crowd of concert goers October 1,2017. Now I'm retired.

    My package from Chino, Ca arrived after 7 days...it's okay at least it came. The worst scenario was almost half of the stuff sent to me by my niece in Chino were gone....yes ...gone as in stolen. My favorite rubber shoes, some big jars of coffee and many more. It was unsuspecting when the box was delivered for a fee of $63.85 pasted on top and the box was in good shape as well. When I opened the box a letter from Los Angeles Network distribution center was at the bottom making excuses about the damage in handling by the postal service. Really? They opened the box, get some of my good stuff and put the notice at the bottom and close it nicely. Please educate your people of not stealing other people's items. I was really disappointed with your service. Lesson learned, I told my relatives there in California never ever do business with you.

    I ordered a book for my summer class two weeks ago, hoping it would have arrived on time, but it never arrived. The edtimated delivery date was May 29-Jun 05; however, the book has been in the Los Angeles Networking Distribution Center for the pat couple days. I think it’s ridiculous it has been taking so long. I need to book ASAP for my class because I have assignments due by this Friday.

    Is it company policy to pass by a mailbox if a vehicle is parked near your mailbox and the postal carrier would actually need to step out of the vehicle to deliver our mail and the neighbors mail? It is a public street and i cant control who parks on the street. This happens very frequently. It is very inconvient when you are expecting mail.

    Former employee. I truly do not understand how this business is still in business. The most poorly managed place ive ever had the displeasure to work for. In all fairness , ive only worked for one office. Ironwood MI. Under Mary Beth Helen. I was "trained" in Marquette by jim pirtle. Which consisted of a slide show, smoke breaks and war stories. The hotel was nice though. I never made my 90 day probation, 89 to be exact so i had no union representation because i had yet to make 90 days. Even though i was forced to pay union dues two weeks in. I actually loved the 12 miles walking 6 days a week, that was the best part, staying and getting healthier. But the part , the deal breaker was getting berated day in day out by Mary Beth Helen. In front of everyone. I showed up everyday 15 min early. Never late. Never missed one day. Tried my hardest. Due diligence.. And still got sent packing. Heres my problem with the usps co. There are millions of people in line for this awesome govt. Job with benefits and perks and no. You get none of that until your permanent. 6 years on adverage. I didnt know that until i was already hired. Its lieing. So in conclusion, you guys really need to clean house in respect to management. Best wishes. S

    I have been employed at the USPS for 22 years. I work at the Michigan Metroplex in maintenance. I have seen first hand the intentional delay of mail. One obvious instance was when On Sunday morning, I witnessed 45 various containers of outgoing state mail that should have been dispatched the previous night. The management is inept. Criteria needs to be created across all P&DCs for management staffing. All operations supervisors need to have been a clerk or mail handler for a minimum of 5 years and be required to have an associate degree in statistical process control just like the automotive manufacturers. The same should be required of MDOs with a 4 year degree in processing technology. All plant managers should have a masters degree in business management. The 204 program should be abolished. Too many times the 204 is given full responsibility over operations in every functional area. The rated supervisors rely too heavily on the 204bs. The new maintenance promotion system is totally ineffective. Instead of determining a candidates suitability through knowledge, skills and abilities, they rely on an arbitrary interview process that is heavily skewed towards nepotism and cronyism. This is bad for business and the moral of highly qualified candidates. Too many times custodial employees are promoted into positions they are not qualified for and this creates unsafe working conditions and massive financial abuse. The work schedule for maintenance is totally erroneous and is wasting money. Level 9 and 10 maintenance employees are being scheduled 7 days per week. There are level 7 employees that are capable of performing the work on regular time as opposed to allowing higher level employees perform that work at a 125% premium. This a waste on a stupid scale. It is hard for me to believe that we are an isolated organization. There are many other areas that would border on fraud, waste or abuse at my facility but I don’t have the time to elaborate.

    trying to contact the appropriate facilities manager for the Delavan Wisconsin (53115) Post Office. Postmaster is out of office until next Wednesday. USPS has a contractor on site repairing the private steps, however this contractor has caused significant damage to the public sidewalk and is "non-responsive".

    yes, for the past few months i’ve been told by numerous people that the letters they mail to me are being marked rejected and sent back to them!! i’ve never received them nor rejected anything!! why am i paying for a PO box if my letters are being rejected by someone who is not me? i have the free app that shows i’m to receive mail and when i go pick up my mail the bills are their but not my letters!! i’ve complained and no one called me or anything i’m furious.

    Our mail service is unreliable to the point we are not receiving out bills or house payment bill. it is affecting my credit rating, not getting over due phone calls for non payment. we fired a report on many occasions for receiving some else mail. therefor we believe this is in retaliation for reporting it. This in turn is forcing us to move to another location away from our local postal service.

    I have informed delivery. Everything that I have received an email for delivery has been delivered. Except on Friday May 18, 2018, 3 birthday cards and something from the IRS was not delivered. Funny how everything is being delivered except the things with money. I went into the local USPS and I was told that the delivery driver delivered everything for that day. In January I mailed a USB with pictures on it to a relative with family pictures, when the mail arrived at her house the USB was gone.

    I love reading these articles about the deployment of high-tech scanning systems. But in the end, it's the people using them that matters. Yesterday, I got a delivery of two packages. The tracking numbers for each show that they had been sorted at 8:59 AM, loaded for delivery at 9:59 AM, and delivered at 12:58 PM. But I was expecting a third (Murphy's Law says that's the one I really needed). I checked the tracking number, and saw the message "Delivery attempted – no access to delivery location". Interestingly, it had also been sorted at 8:59 AM, loaded for delivery at 9:59 AM, but the delivery attempt had been at 3:16 PM. Now, I understand what happened, the driver simply missed it. But here I am a day later, and today's delivery has come and gone with no package, and there's no update in the system that shows whether it's going to be delivered at all. I like my postal carrier and don't want to get her in trouble, but come on!

    I've been missing my media mail package since January 2nd the day I mailed it. I've put in so many requests and spoke to the customer service in Tampa and nothing. I had a lot of books in there which I saved up yo buy. My dad threw away the receipt on accident so I can't track it and I called the post office and no one can give me a tracking number, but the customer service lady said they could. I had a keregg coffee box wrapped in brown paper with lots of cleat tap to send the media mail so this wouldn't happen and yet it did. Please I just want to find my books.

    Has ISC LA customs caught up with Xmas backlog yet ? Its May. I have legally imported plant material for APHIS inspection in Hawaii, but if customs loses it for weeks, the germplasm will be useless. USDA does not mention anything about compliance with customs in the permit process. These kinds of failures drive more & more importers to illegal smuggling, increasing risks of agricultural pests & disease.

    Who do the local postmasters answer to? Ours covers for everything from sloth to theft. Our street has no assigned carrier, so they give to whoever gets stuck with it. So sometimes our mail comes at 1000AM, sometimes at 8PM, and sometimes they just dont bother coming and show up twice the next day, once at 0800 and once whenever someone gets tagged to come. Also not uncommon for you to receive an insured package that has been ripped open and is empty. If it was damaged on route is one thing, but when it is processed at receiving post office and not identified as damaged before carrier gets it, kind of takes the question out of who/where. And God forbid you go into the post office and ask to speak to the Post Master to complain. He will stand there and tell you that "he" is not in today. I know our Post Master by sight that is why I find it so amusing that he claims he is not there. I need a new job, running a post office comes to mind as something relatively easy, and requires no accountability or skills

    I just tried to file a complaint about a package I sent from India where I am living…you require a USA address but everyone who wants to complain is not living there….although I am American. Shabby system at best. My package which I sent from India on 10 April has been in customs in New York it seems since 24 April and has not been released. I sent another similar package and it was stuck there but finally was delivered on May 7 almost a month after being sent… Why does it take more than two weeks to go through customs? The package is just a CD of Tibetan Chanting..nothing complicated…. the one which has still not been delivered as of May 17. Please get Customs to hurry up and release this for delivery. It is very important and is being to sent to someone with a terminal illness… I read the comments on the Audit site for 2008 and it seems that this happens all the time and it is inexcusable! Please send me a reply as soon as possible. I am fed up. The USPS has become totally unreliable. Used to be so good.

    Can you guys please explain how you guys been in business for so long with such a horrible reputation in customer service. Does anyone notice that almost everyday there is a complaint on here. First off the 20-30 min wait on the phone is more like 50-60mins. Let’s be real, in a sense I see you guys rather not speak to your customers because you guys know your service sucks. Why in God’s green earth can’t you have a service called 24/7 online chat support? Please explain how hard can it be to have a online chat option, come on you guys have a mobile app but can’t have online quick chat. One day I swear I will have a opportunity to sue you guys just for you guys to understand the stress you put people through. You guys make us wait on hold just to tell us you can’t help us, what kind of evil torture is that?

    Your phone and email service is worthless. I have been on the phone for an hour and a half. I can't even get a real person on your email service. None of the prompts on your phone number or email pertain to the quick question I need answered. I plan to contact the representative in my area. I cannot even find my carrier who delivers my mail all up and down my street - to everyone but me!!!!

Total and utter waste of time. I guess I need to get back my pitney bowes machine, cost $15 a month but time is money and this product has become an utter and complete waste of time.

    As a former Letter Carrier, I can tell you Postal Policy is if the dog is not restrained, or if the carrier cannot get to your box without being in contact with the dog, he cannot deliver. Size of the dog and disposition does not matter. Dog bites are one of the biggest job injuries to carriers and even a friendly dog can bite. I doubt you would want the paperwork that goes along with an incident if your dog would happen to bite. It's a black mark for your dog with your City. The Post Office has even threatened to not cover the carrier in the event they disregard the rules and deliver anyway, although I do not know of any cases where this has actually occurred.

    After reading through all these comments I cannot believe how easy it is to solve this situation of packaging material abuse and Theft then again a suggestion I'm about to make will fall on deaf ears and if the government reads about it it will not be instituted because they do not no what common sense is and they are the best at abusing and wasting money. The answer is simple say it's $13 to ship a flat rate envelope just charged $0.50 for the envelope upfront and $12.50 for the shipping. Apply this method across all the different boxes and envelopes and the price stays the same and people will not buy the materials to use as stuffing. Problem solved

    My business has had a box for over 25 years. Efficiency and reliability is rapidly deteriorating I won' t tackled price increases but my pet peeve is the handling of first class mail. I can almost always depend on first class mail on Mondays and one other day in the week, Never on Tuesday unless they miss Monday for a holiday. That is poor service for a full time box holder. We received inbox notices of due dates, which has recently stopped without notice. My box was cancelled due to my dependency on these notices. After renewing I paid Oct 31, 2017 for 6 months. Due again on May 1. I paid on May 11,2018 and was charged a $22 late fee, The clerk was new but she tried to explain I was very late and the rent was due in March. I said I paid Oct and due again in May and was not THAT late but I was charged an excessive penalty. I again asked why there was not box notice as in the past. She then said they had no way of knowing when a box as due. I knew that wasn't true because it is computerized and she eventually looked it up and said I was 10 days late. So despite her inability to discuss the issue, the only avenue I had to retrieve my mail was to pay the ransom of $22.00. Over the years I have had 4 checks missing ,1 money order and a painting, which was never recovered. Despite having the receipt and tracking number I was not given an option for a claim because the time limit expired. The supervisor said the PO did not retain tracking numbers but recycled them. I feel this is another untruth from this branch. Needless to say, I am notifying my clients of a mail change before my next due date. I will be taking my business outside this PO. Enough is enough. These people just have no work ethic or integrity.

    hi all. i have the same issue, took 18 yrs to find my first guitar, finally a couple of weeks ago, i found it in china of all places.. was shipped on the 3rd of may,2018 , came into new york on 5/6/18, shows been in customs since and as of today 5/11/18..... i know gibosn has a big deal with copys coming overseas to usa, and customs is cracking down on it, but this i from 1977, a aria. what is bsically normal time frame to get package?. i am 2 states over....................

    I also have a problem with my mail prescriptions being held up at the Greensboro Nc Distribution Center. These people need to be dealt with. Can't get through to them on the phone. Packages being tracked are said to be in transit to destination but won't say where. Tired of waiting on important medicine. One of these days someone is going to get seriously ill because of not getting there medicine on time. Someone needs to investigate this place. There are many other complaints if you look at there website. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!

    Lost $1.3 billion in Q1 2018. No surprise here. The worst service/business on earth that is going like there is no problem on daily business. Lost mails, lost packages, mailman doesn't show up in many days and horrible customer services. In north Plano, TX post office station, the service counter clerks act like they do us a major favor to work there and we will take what ever they want to give us. Not!!!. We use FexEx and UPS for much much more reliable service and the customer service is so much nicer. All important mails are replaced by electronic notifications or emails. Why USPS is still in business? Moving junk mails and invest in FexEx and UPS? The more bad services at USPS is the more money they can make in fexEx and USP?
