We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue. 

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations. 

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse. 

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work. 

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring. 
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints. 

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package.     This is RIDICULOUS. I filed a complaint against my mail carrier for the THIRD time now. This is because she is SCARED of my dog. NOT because my dog poses a THREAT or is outside while she is delivering. I feel that IN ORDER for a carrier to be allowed to NOT deliver mail to a certain house with a dog is IF the dog has been posed to be a threat, if there's a PAPER TRIAL on how many times she has complained about my dog & IF THERE IS EVIDENCE, NOT HEAR-SAY, THAT MY DOG IS OUTSIDE AND/OR UNLEASHED while the carrier is delivering mail. This is NOT the case. My dog is ALWAYS in the house as at times as long and the carrier is on the block. IF im in the house with the dog, which is what is usual, my dog is in the room in the BACK of the house while the carrier is delivering. This is the THIRD time i have opened a claim AND THIS TIME, i was told that THE CARRIER HAS THE RIGHT, yes, the "RIGHT", to unlawfully delay and/or detain my mail IF she knows there is a dog IN my home, not outside of my home, INSIDE of the home. These are government employees whose salaries are paid through the PEOPLE that they are delivering the mail to. IT IS NOT A RIGHT for me not to recieve my mail SIMPLY because the carrier is AFRAID of dogs. This is PURE discrimination and it needs to END. My dog, who in 10 years has NEVER had an animal control or complaint against her, NEVER has attacked anyone & who had NEVER posed a threat to ANY mail carrier,is NOT the issue. The ISSUE is having people working for a department and a job who is INCAPABLE of completing the jobs qualifications and expectations because of a FEAR that MY DOG never posed on her.

    Why is it that a foreign county can accept, pull, package and mail an order in the time frame they state and JFK customs sits on the package? My package has been sitting (arrival import airport) since 3:37 am 7-28 and nothing new to report? Come on, get this package moving! Do your job!

    I've been trying to do a change of address on-line and after several failed attempts called the 800 number listed for customer service. I waited on hold for well over 30 minutes never hearing anything but the most insipid loop of music that played over and over in my ear. As if that wasn't bad enough no one picked up my call and I was abruptly cut off. I wouldn't exactly call what I just went through a good customer service experience. USPS... you really need to get your act together!

    I used the usps international priority mail service to have a package delivered to India. IT has been over month and half and the package is not delivered to the address. I went to my local post office only to find out that my package is in the customs office in India. And the clerk told me there is nothing I can do about it. I cannot file a claim because USPS did their part . When I explained to the clerk no USPS did not do their part because the package is not delivered they said I had to call the custom office in India to get the package release. so I asked I do not have a number. They told me they did not have one either and they are not responsible for the package. When asked why as I customer who paid usps to deliver the package is asked to do this they said that is all usps can do. SO my question is can someone explain to me why I have to call the custom office when I paid usps for their services to deliver the package to the requested address. It is like the usps is telling me that we got your package to the border of the country and now it is your repsonsibiltiy to get it to the final destination. So what in the world did I pay usps for? Can you please refund my money because you clearly did not deliver the services. Under any other circumstances this would be a case of no service provided but been charged which is essentially fraud.

    My post office in Wurtsboro NY the staff is friendly but I have not had very good experiences there first of all they are suppose to be open at 8:30 EVERYTIME I have gone at 8:30 the lobby is not open and I am not talking once or twice I am talking EVERY SINGLE TIME one time I sat outside until 8:45 I have to be at work at 9:00 so any time I have business at the post office I am late to work, also once I get in there is always only ONE person at the window it doesn't matter if there is 2 people or 10 people in the lobby and where the man that works the window is very nice and professional he is EXTREMELY SLOW and needs help on almost order so it makes everything even longer. We had a hold on our mail my husband went to pick it up they told him there was no mail I knew it was wrong called there they there was an entire bin waiting making a 2nd trip to this place after you have waited thru that lobby is extremely frustrating also one time I was waiting for a package I kept getting thing in my box that it was there I would go there and I was told 3 times it wasn't there and I must have gotten it by mistake then my packaged got returned to the sender and when I was like I was here three times this week how could you return it to the sender and the attitude was like it s gone now nothing we can do it about it,another time my daughter's xmas gift was not in my box but I had a confirmation it was delivered I called down there to see if maybe it got misplaced was greeted with an attitude like we don't make mistakes and you must of lost it, the next day the gift was in my box with a post it that stated sorry I delivered to the wrong house which is fine accidents happen but the way I was treated on that phone call was out of line I hate to say it but they have created such an environment down there that I am frustrated before I even walk in the door. Today while in the lobby there at least 2 other people in that lobby verbalizing there constant issues with this location my suggestion would be that they have someone better trained and faster working the lobby and have 2nd person ready to jump on when it gets busy today I changed over to po box just to avoid dealing with that lobby something that should have taken 5 minutes turned into 35 minutes. It's just disappointing because there are some really great staff there but something is definitely not working

    The real reason for the Postal Service turnover rate. I was hired as a CCA and was excited because I was now an official government employee. That excitement quickly diminished. I wouldn't dare tell a single soul to apply for the Postal Service unless they have a family member or loved one already in the field, considering the nepotism that goes on. If you are hired already I would say to take pictures of everything and keep any and ALL documents. It seems as though the USPS has no integrity on how they treat the people who make up the body and Image of the Postal Service. They are rude, they play childish mind games, and work you more days than the labor law allows, but yet they get away with it because they hire CCA's all the time then fire them in their 90 day without any 30,60,80,10 review to correct their behavior before terminating them. They purposely will act as if they did not receive your paperwork, and knowing that CCA's are new and know nothing about the neighborhood they are in, they place them on routes with many dogs and provide no dog warning cards, and they take your union dues although the union can't assist with anything until AFTER the probationary period is up. (that's if they don't fire you 6 days before hand-not that that is what they tell you in the "academy) No one wants to come to work EVERYDAY and deal with UNNECESSARY incidences, that's not what they come to work for. Yes there will be work drama and disgruntle customers normal work setting issues. No one comes to work to have supervisors collaboratively make them quit as if you are in boot camp for the military. I deeply regret working for the postal service, I had no idea that I would endure complete nonsense from supervisors EVERYDAY, what ever happen to the days where you could just punch in, do your job and go home? Has the three steps to termination died: verbal warning, write up, suspension, termination. Is there any employers who conduct reviews anymore? You can't take a day off anymore, I mean does employees have any HUMAN RIGHTS when it comes to jobs? Any of these things exist in the work world anymore? I'm confused. Any person who gets hired on after reading this comment, don't say no one told you about the ins to this government job. The only and I mean ONLY part you will enjoy are the good people you meet inside the station and out, and being able to do your job on your own at your pace. Good luck to you.

    The USPS has some serious issues with credibility. On multiple occasions, I have had the dreaded "Attempted Delivery" slips pinned to my door. While I was home. While I was able to sign for my package. It was obvious that the carrier had my name and apartment number, seeing as how they were written on the slip. Whether or not these slips were left because of the sheer incompetence of the carrier, or because they had no package to deliver, it would be helpful to be notified in situ, and not via email hours later. Not to mention the usual hassle one need go through to deal with the USPS in general. The USPS should direct its focus from cleaning up their aged post offices and creating seldom used shipping services to doing the one thing that they are supposed to. DELIVERING MAIL ON TIME.

    My package arrived at this center on 7/25/18 it was scanned into the facilty at 10:45 pm then stuck in transit ever since. Meaning it has never departed. There are many of people with the same complaint. Somebody is OBVIOUSLY STEALING In this facilty. How is a packaged scanned, then lost ? I work hard for a living and lost way more the little $50 the insurance has to offer. I will be contacting my family attorney and will be coming at this situation with legal aggression because I’m over it.

    As Executrix of my deceased Aunt’s estate, I legally filed a change of address for her to my address. One of her children has now redirected that change of address to her own home. She has already stolen money out of her mother and her sibling’s joint account and now this. She is looking for more money coming in to the estate. How can this not have been prevented? I got no notification that it was redirected after I changed it.

    I worked for a company 20 years ago that helped develop rfid tags for USPS. That is when I learned USPS was not government, which makes since. It is nice to know OIG works towards an ongoing stride for higher level of efficiency and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, which I'm thankful for. I've had ongoing heartache with my mail for the last 3+ months. It really goes beyond that but not at the level it is today. I live in a condominium building with individual #s and all our mail boxes are located on a main wall centrally located. In addition to receiving other people's (other mail box #s) mail and small packages I've not received all of my mail. 2 months ago I signed up for USPS 'Informed Delivery', which once I login to my account on their website, shows me images of the front of all my mail (addressed to me) to arrive that day. Another reason I signed up is because I hadn't received a governent check within time frame it was supposed to come. I had to wait 2 months for the check to be reissued and mailed again, which was only option. Yesterday afternoon I logged in to see my mail to arrive that day and finally saw that government logo with the known address from where they mail checks from. I walked practically on a cloud to mail boxes so happy that this life saver of a check has finally shown up. So when I opened my mail box and saw it empty it was quite heartbreaking. I peeked in at the empty outgoing mail slot knowing it had been picked up for the day. I sat near mail boxes for over an hour until 5:00PM.. no mail delivery person. I talked to a few of my neighbors and they all say they receive someone else's mail almost on a daily basis. One of them sadly admitted to tossing anything that looked unimportant even if not addressed to him. I shouldn't have to worry about another mail recipient doing the right thing, I should have confidence that the USPS delivery person will deliver our mail with minimal error. There should be a higher level of accountability. USPS customer service was already closed for the day yesterday but I plan on calling Monday morning to let them know about this incident.

    I think think there should be more verification. I have a un wanted houseguest who changed thier address to my home now it has become thier residence. Its dumb how all you have to do is pay 1$ to live somewhere. when i never granted permission for this. A copy of a lease should be identified to establish residence. Now i am stuck paying unwanted courts to evict them. Needs improvement badly.

    A package was mailed from Hickory, NC on July 18 to Lincolnton, NC- less than 25 miles down the road from Hickory. It was regular USPS First class Mail. We thought it was lost when it didn't arrive by Friday. Today, a week later, on July 25 the parcel arrives. Seems it has been to Greensboro where it was held up for a few days with no particular reason- then forwarded to Charlotte and then back to Lincolnton. Amazing how inefficient the system is.

    on the 4th of July I put some rocks by the far corner of my yard to protect my flower bed. After this my mail stopped being delivered. I had no notice left, no person contacted me what so ever on what was happening. Went to the post office on the 11th and spoke with the supervisor and she did not want to hear anything I had to say about my rocks. I was told they had to be moved when I do that I will get my mail. The rocks did not stop anyone getting mail. My neighbor did not like them. My mail box is on the other side of my yard nothing was blocking that. Because of the rocks this person stopped delivering my mail for over a week. Regardless if I made an error in judgement with my rocks or not the way this was handled was very wrong. The only way I realized it was stopped was when I went to track my prescriptions I was waiting for and it said they could not be delivered. I think this should of been handled a lot differently than just stopping delivering my mail.

    My package, which was supposed to be delivered on July 18, has been sitting in ISC NEW YORK, NY since July 14. It is now July 23, a full week later. What is taking so long and why is my package not being delivered?? A delay of this length, absent hurricanes or snowstorms, is totally unjustified and unacceptable.

    I am total disappointed in the USPS. Their "We deliver for you" is a joke. I have lived in my new home for over a year and we still can't get mail delivery. We only get excuses from the Livermore, CA postmaster. To risky for mail carrier to deliver to new construction. However, we have some USPS drivers delivering packages and leaving on our doorstep. We have a beautiful central mail box just collecting dust, but they can leave packages on our doorstep. Too Risky, right. (big eye roll) We should get Trump to shot down this government institution and go with private deliver services that will "deliver for you".

    Almost every time my family sends anything through the USPS, the envelope is opened and the contents are stolen. We report missing envelopes and they ALWAYS come up with "not found". My sister sent my mother a $50 gift card to Macy's at Christmas time and it was stolen by an employee and reported not found. Now, again I'm tracking an envelope and they are also not accepting fraud. Well, this time I will press charges due to the contents of the envelope. I will never, ever use USPS again.

    I am the Borough Administrator for Manville Borough, NJ. Our Mayor and elected officials are receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding the state of disarray at the Manville NJ post office on Brooks Blvd. The outside of the building's lawn areas are covered in weeds over four feet in height. The Borough does not allow its residents and other businesses to be in this condition, yet, when we approach the station manager with our concerns, we are received with very negative comments and told we cannot do anything about it since it is a federal property. Our residents are correct to feel that they work hard to keep their properties looking tidy to be good neighbors in the community. The post office in our town should also be a good neighbor. We have been told repeatedly that we cannot enforce our ordinances and place site violations on the property as we would with any other property owner. Why is this? The post office should not be above the local law when it comes to exterior maintenance of the facility. The American flag flies at that site and the weeds and total disregard for the community is appalling. Total disrespect.

    I went to mail a letter to a foreign country and two agents told me three different information about the insurance amount. It ended up being less than what they originally quoted me. I made a comment about it. And, agent asked me why I am here (meaning why I am in this country). I do not think it is her place to ask me that type of a question. I think agents are not trained to give proper information and they are not professionals who can communicate with customers with respect. Unfortunately, Post Office lose business having these types of unprofessional customer service agents at the counter. I hope they know that they have a job because of their customers.

    I have a letter missing since MAY 15, 2018. I have reported it, and each time NO RESPONSE OTHER THAN A "How did we do?" survey! The post office says they can't help. Online reporting obviously does nothing. What if it was stolen? Don't you check on this stuff? One other piece of mail had been missing, from the same post office, and finally returned to sender. Is there a problem at this post office? Where can I get help?

My package was sent to me from Turkey Priority Mail, I have a copy of the receipt , but there is no number I can find to talk to anyone . You can file a complaint with the Postal Service at the USPS website. Scroll over the "Help" tab and select "Contact us". Then click "Email us". Choose the tab marked "Where is My Package" or "Where is My Mail."

    USPS obviously does NOT want people to contact them with problems. Any attempt to get to carrier-related issues leads straight to tracking. Other attempts failed also. So I got a brilliant idea: try to buy something from them (stamps)! I got to a real person immediately. This problem is way too bad for even a government agency to create it accidentally. They are underfunded and this is one way for them to save cost, by treating their customers like crap. And this is a government agency treating us this way. Despicable.
