It seems a lost piece of mail isn’t too different from losing your hat at school. In both cases, you’ll want to check the lost and found bin. For the U.S. Postal Service, that would be the Mail Recovery Center (MRC) in Atlanta, its official lost and found department. Known at one time as the Dead Letter Office, the Mail Recovery Center works to reunite undeliverable packages and letters with either sender or recipient.

Processing centers and retail and delivery units send mail items without valid addressee and sender information to the MRC, where MRC staff act as detectives. They scan and open packages in hopes of finding address information that will facilitate the delivery or return of items valued at $25 or more. If items can’t be delivered or returned, the Postal Service donates, recycles, discards, or auctions them off.

Auctions of unclaimed items are popular with the reseller community, although it’s a risk-reward proposition. Most items are arranged by merchandise in large lots, such as sporting equipment and musical instruments, and not sold individually. Potential buyers willing to travel to the MRC are given the opportunity to glance at the oversized box that contains the lot of items. However, they cannot touch, move or otherwise inspect the items before bidding. Three years ago, the Postal Service moved the auctions online in an effort to reach a wider bidding audience. It uses a contractor to run the auctions.

In fiscal year (FY) 2014, the MRC received 88 million items and processed 12 million of those valued at $25 or more. It returned 2.5 million items to customers — a resolution rate of 21 percent of researched items, or 3 percent of total incoming items. For mailpieces valued at $25 or more without a valid address, the MRC retains them for 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, depending on the mail class or special services used. Customers can file an inquiry about a lost mailpiece, and then employees search to try to match an inquiry with an undelivered item.

Our recent audit report looked at the MRC’s effectiveness at handling customer inquiries and managing items it received. We found that Postal Service sales and service associates need to better instruct customers on filing an inquiry. We also found the MRC did not track how many inquiries resulted in items returned to customers because it did not have procedures to capture and analyze inquiry data.

Also, the Postal Service did not sufficiently oversee the contractor responsible for auctioning unclaimed items at the MRC or fully log and reconcile items sent for auction, the report said.

We are looking for feedback on your specific experience with the Mail Recovery Center or auction process. Do you have any experience with the Mail Recovery Center? Do you see ways to strengthen the process?

Have you ever participated in the auction process? If yes, what works well? What could be improved?

Report a lost package.

I work at the Post Office here in Houston, Texas at the PD&C and have noticed that during times of holiday card sending a lot of mail gets missed placed in the mail for some reason or another. People do not close the envelopes good and many pictures and cards have come up undeliverable. I wanted to suggest that using the new system that photographs the mail before the customer would get it could easily be used the same way for the photos of people at their most celebrated times lost in the mail could easily be recovered by the sender or the receiver. I believe it could be done. We shred people's memories daily without even trying to find the true owner. It would be a more up to date way of monitoring the dead letter office in every PD&C..

I'm awaiting a priority mail for more than 10 days which contains my passport, I have travel plans scheduled for next week for which I need my passport. The online tracker shows that the package reached my city (Atlanta), on 5/3 and in "in transit to destination" from 5/4. I've been to 3 post office so far, including my local post office. I've called 4-5 other post offices and processing centers, but nobody seems to have an idea where that mail would be. Most of them say, it never made it here, so we cant help you. The last processing center where it was scanned is 30369 zip code and they said that it was enroute from there, but they dont know where. At this point, Im running out of options and wondering how long can I wait before I cancel my travel plans. Tracking number: 9114901230801637771677

I brought my 2016 IRA contribution to the Island Heights post office 4/17/17 to get postmarked and mailed. Almost a month later and the investment firm has not received it. I have the receipt and a picture of the letter with the postmark date 4/17/17 from I.H. post office. I will be going there tomorrow first thing.

Mailed a 4" x 4" x 4" box on April 28th (from Decatur, Illinois to Louisburg, Ks. (2 pretend bowls of food for dolls) 1 Day later it was in Kansas City, Kansas. It is now eleven days later, and tracking still shows it is in Kansas City, KS. I sent a search email 3 days ago, and no change in tracking, no contact or update from USPS. Search Request Details: Request Date: 05/05/2017 Reference: Search ID #1982376 Tracking Number: 9500113599427118075876 I have an angry first-time customer, and this was for a birthday gift. Frustrating is such an understatement. She has demanded I send her another shipment, and I feel as though I am forced to do that. I may have already lost her as a future customer, even though this is obviously not my fault (she verified correct address).

sent a priority envelope to my cousin in okla. with a camera inside it was in a hard logic case and in that case was a camera... red A735 ... the mail man on my cousin's end said that it was delivered with the ripped envelope... so somewhere in transit my camera got lost or stolen... i would like to think lost... but won't count on it... it had a confirm of delivery on it... and i'm surprised that the post office in Oklahoma. even sent it to the house like that without saying it was received that way... there was a sub working that day is the excuse they gave to why it wasn't noticed... please how many fools do you think us people out here are... they say that i can't get anything for this because i didn't insure it... i thought priority is ins. auto up to 50 bucks... and who would think that something with a tracking number and priority would get snatched... please do something about this... I would be glad to take a digital camera from your unclaimed things that you have in place of mine... not a real cheap one mine was about 100 the case was 12 dollars and the sd card was 6. thank you

After much research we believe that we have dropped off a medium flat rate box at our local USPS without it's shipping label. How do we go about attempting to recover the undeliverable package. I can list all contents in the package and give any information you would need. It was dropped off on May 1st 2017 in Kissimmee FL- medium rectangular flat rate box and contained women clothing and water bottle with a unicorn on it. Please contact me as soon as possible.

How do I retrieve my mail that was not delivered? I had my mail forwarded from Venice, Florida to East Setauket, N.Y. I had the correct address, but accidentally put the zip code as 11773 instead of 11733. Now the local P.O. tells me that I cannot retrieve any of the mail, with the incorrect zip code. I have since corrected the error, but need my mail that was not delivered.

I mailed a letter-size envelope on Monday, April 10 in Fayetteville, GA. The post office was not open 8:15 AM, so I mailed it in the drive thru drop box. It has never been received by the business located in Lansing, MI, nor has the letter been returned to me. The letter was correctly labeled and stamped and had a return address. As soon as I found out on April 21st that the letter was not received, I went to the post office. They knew nothing of any mail problems. I went again on April 25th, again, no help and nothing about a problem. Now today, May 2, I again went to the Fayetteville, GA post office asking if anyone else has come in with a problem, and they know nothing!!!

I've had the same problem in Canton. I dropped off several pieces of mail, including bills to pay and thank you cards, at the exterior drop box in Canton, GA on April 30. When I noticed none of the checks had cleared after 10 days, I called the post office this week; the only advice they had was to call the postal service inspector for the region. Long story short, this is a situation that is wreaking financial havoc for me. I quit mailing important items from my mailbox three years ago from theft, and some things cannot be paid online. If you can't trust the mail to be dropped off at the actual post office, what options do we have? It is ridiculous and frustrating.

I have 2 packages got stolen within a month in San Francisco. One large package which was my ski jacket and pant was showing delivered at the front door at 8:47am, but I didn't see my package outside my house at 9am. USPS trucks normally deliver packages in my area starting from 11am. Weird huh? Another priority mail package which is my GPS device got stuck at one facility for ages without update info.

I mailed about 20 to 30 vendor bill payments (checks) out on April 10, 2017. None of them have processed the bank, a second vendor had called today looking for a very important check we mailed out that day. I called the post office and was told that they are having major problems, numerous customer complaints with mail that was mailed out on that date that still has not been received. They do not know if everyone's mail was lost, stolen, or delayed and now in route. I'm not sure what to do at this point. We may have to stop payment on these checks. Uhhhg..

Ricky, I'm having the same issue. I mailed out about 20 or more vendor bill payments on April 10th, all are missing and have not cleared the bank. The post office said they are having major problems with missing mail on that date.. I also had mailed out a large stack of advertisement brochures that day, and used almost a roll of stamps...those are not so important.. uhhhg.. I am in Michigan, these checks went all over within the U.S. I will be calling one of our vendors who are in a near by city first thing in the morning, going to the post office, contacting the inspector general, and going to bank to assess options. I went inside the post office to mail these as we have a post office box I check daily. One of the checks was to the USPS for an annual post office box. That too has not cleared the bank. Hopefully I have better news in the morning. Our bank charges $35 per check to stop payment. This is stressful.

Tanya, I also mailed a letter on April 10th from Fayetteville, GA going to Lansing, MI. I just called the company tonight, 5/2/17 and they have not received it. My post office knows nothing about "missing mail" however, I have not gone to the Atlanta Post Office which is where my letter goes to from Fayetteville. When you said the post office said they are having "major problems with missing mail on that date" is it the local post office where you are located, or is it a major hub? Thank you, Mary

My mom sent me a package in December, the USPS man picked it up instead of the FedEx man and it got lost of course. It happened to go all the way down to Atlanta in which case it ended up at the Last and found... There were 4 places on this large box where my address along with my mom's address had been stamped. We filed paperwork after paperwork to end up being put in a loop of sorry, can't find it. Then two months later, a check that had been inside this box inside an envelope turns up at my moms doorstep. How can you claim that you are a legitimate service when this obvious thievery is happening. We have all the paperwork and proof of everything. This seems like a scam of large proportions. There has to be security cameras in this place watching people steal our packages...

In Dec. 2016, a media package enroute to San Diego from OR was damaged at the LA processing center, according to USPS. The package wrapping mysteriously became detached from the box containing the media (books, DVDs). USPS was kind enough to return to the sender(me) the cutout sections of the wrapper (TO/From info.) along with the loss/missing notification letter. A request for search was filed with USPS, containing a detailed description of the contents in the box. Three months later we have nothing to show except a letter of acknowledgement of my request mailed 3/21/17 from MRC. Based upon the 2014 stats. of 85M lost/stolen items, my guess is that everything in that box is headed for the auction block or ebay. :(

1/28/17 I shipped 27 boxes (total cost $1500) from deceased daughter's 80906 location to 30127. 1 marked media came to me 2/3/17 as a cut out portion with mail label stating no contents. This means the box was never shipped and remained in 80906. I've filed forms online talked to my local PO to no avail. This box contained medical records legal binder music CDs music sheets a FedEx envelope addressed to myself funeral programs death certificates photos sheet music books etc. it was the most important of all boxes shipped and the only one marked media! It was not insured as I was told if no receipts then cannot claim. All items are not replaceable and invaluable to our family. The ATL MCR states could not locate. Thus still in CO. There are no phone numbers that are of any help! To note that this has already happen before in Sep 2016 where 3 boxes sent media from 80906 containing books to our granddaughters that arrived as empty folded boxes staying no contents. This happened again earlier last year to another person sent from same zip. I believe the USPS needs to seriously look into 80906 and investigate what's going on there! When I called the mailing agency to let them know of this, their first words were that "they (USPS) stole it". Evidently it is very common there. Plus this is a military town. I inquired with other locals and many had the same response. Stolen! Really? It had a tracking number in which it stated delivered!!! Yet only the portion with label was delivered! What a joke the tracking is! This box was heavy duty 36# and sealed all over very well. Even if it was dropped it would have withstood it. Other boxes sent weighed that or more and made it. It's just the media mail since USPS is allowed to open it. Even if media mail contains items not acceptable the USPS has the responsibility to forward it asking for the extra postage which has never happened as it is easier to simply cut out the mailing label and send stamped no contents. Unacceptable and wrong in so many ways. The contents of this particular box also can lead to identity theft as there were so many legal docs and medical docs inside with information. Items in box contained addresses and names so shouldn't have been hard to locate someone to send it to. So if we experience any type of indentity fraud do I blame the USPS on it? So what's a mother to do in such a case as this? USPS has taken the one and only box that was of dire importance to me and our family. Furious and heartbroken at the same time. Needless to say, I will no longer put my trust with anything mailed or shipped via USPS and begin to only use UPS or FedEx and at a much higher cost knowing my packages will arrive and can be tracked responsibly. I truly hope someone at OIG will read this but sadly I have no faith that anything will come of this.

Seems different capabilities of the USPS are not working together or lack proper systems for sharing information. I have had a search in since 12/30/2016 for a lost holiday Priority Mail package. Among the items I documented in the search request was "Personal check for $300 drawn on US Bank account. Made out to Jxxxx & Jxxxxx Sxxxxx. Check was placed inside already mentioned greeting card." I have had repeated update emails telling me the package could not be located and requesting further info. Today I got a 1st class letter dated 2/22/2017 from USPS Mail Recovery Center telling me a "letter" was forwarded to them and opened according to its rules. At the bottom of the letter from the Recovery Center was a printed image of a personal check drawn on US Bank for $300 made out to Jxxxx & Jxxxxx Sxxxxx!!!! I'm not certain they only had the greeting card/letter or the entire shipped package. So the Mail Recovery Center on 2/22/2017 had at least one of the items documented in my lost package search exactly as I described it meanwhile I continue to get status updates on lost package search that the package cannot be found. Why are there not procedures and/or systems in place to compare information obtained at the Mail Recovery Center with Lost Package search requests? At a minimum, my info as the shipper identically matched the account name and address on the personal check. While I appreciate the information that the check has been shredded, I am curious about the other contents of the original package some of which had sentimental value. I wish there was a way to update my Lost Package Search request with the reference number from the Mail Recovery Center in an attempt to manually provide the linkage needed.

Mailed a 33 lb. 9.2 oz. case of textbooks using media mail to a school 10 miles away in Virginia. Package transited Billings, MT and Denver, CO to a USPS distribution center in Maryland that designated it Dead Mail and sent it to a mail recovery center. This info is known from USPS tracking. Obviously the tracking number is still on the box or the status could not be posted to it. **1. My business e-mail address is associated with the tracking number. I got status e-mails. Why not simply contact me if sender or delivery info is needed?///// **2. Using the usps.com web site search tool is clumsy and does not lead to useful information. I was directed to the "wrong" on-line form to fill out and had to complete it before the "system" let me know I was in the wrong place. Could not find the right form after much searching. Usps.com search results are pitifully unorganized.///// **3. I tried to call the USPS help line, a poorly automated system that is far from helpful. The best it could do was tell me my tracking number was for a package sent to mail recovery--no option to pursue getting the package back. Called back and tried following several useless alternative paths. The machine finally told me I could speak with a person. Last evening, I was informed the wait time was 40 to 50 minutes. Trying again first thing this morning--after 11 minutes trying to get past the automation--I was informed the wait time was 4 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes.///// **4. After my first try yesterday with the call-in help line, I tried again on usps.com. Finally, stumbled on the right web page to file a lost mail Search Request. The input page did not work right at first, and I had to reenter info more than once, especially to attach images showing the product in the shipment. Submitted the form and sometime later received a Search ID e-mail. But nowhere on the web site or in the e-mail does it say what to expect next and, particularly, when to expect any progress on the matter from USPS.///// **5. Went to the local PO where I mailed the package. The supervisor told me she could not help me other than to hold up a multiple-generation fuzzy photocopy of an address and phone number for the Atlanta Mail Recovery Center. After I told her I was not able to memorize the information, she lent me a pen so I could write it down myself. Lucky I had paper. I specifically asked whether she had a form I could fill out. She said they don't handle that at her PO. Shocking! Arrogant, unhelpful and even hostile! Can't be bothered. Should be fired.///// **6. Called the Atlanta processing center phone number--rang more than a dozen times unanswered.///// **7. Called the USPS help phone number again and somehow followed a path that got me to the Topeka Operations & Materials Customer Service Center. Finally! A human being named Leah answered the phone. She is mailing me a form to submit to (try to?) recover my property. Leah was also very helpful in telling me that none of the basic information a customer would want was available to her or anywhere she could locate on USPS information resources available to her. Boy, it would be nice to know how long it might take to even get a response after submitting forms./////

Nice, so my $170 28lb item with tracking number that just disappeared from the system will end up end up on ebay. Just swell. How the heck can you loose a 28lb box!!!!! Looking at all the folks who bothered to post on this site I wonder if a single one had their issue resolved. I think Ill point my congressman at this site.
