It seems a lost piece of mail isn’t too different from losing your hat at school. In both cases, you’ll want to check the lost and found bin. For the U.S. Postal Service, that would be the Mail Recovery Center (MRC) in Atlanta, its official lost and found department. Known at one time as the Dead Letter Office, the Mail Recovery Center works to reunite undeliverable packages and letters with either sender or recipient.

Processing centers and retail and delivery units send mail items without valid addressee and sender information to the MRC, where MRC staff act as detectives. They scan and open packages in hopes of finding address information that will facilitate the delivery or return of items valued at $25 or more. If items can’t be delivered or returned, the Postal Service donates, recycles, discards, or auctions them off.

Auctions of unclaimed items are popular with the reseller community, although it’s a risk-reward proposition. Most items are arranged by merchandise in large lots, such as sporting equipment and musical instruments, and not sold individually. Potential buyers willing to travel to the MRC are given the opportunity to glance at the oversized box that contains the lot of items. However, they cannot touch, move or otherwise inspect the items before bidding. Three years ago, the Postal Service moved the auctions online in an effort to reach a wider bidding audience. It uses a contractor to run the auctions.

In fiscal year (FY) 2014, the MRC received 88 million items and processed 12 million of those valued at $25 or more. It returned 2.5 million items to customers — a resolution rate of 21 percent of researched items, or 3 percent of total incoming items. For mailpieces valued at $25 or more without a valid address, the MRC retains them for 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, depending on the mail class or special services used. Customers can file an inquiry about a lost mailpiece, and then employees search to try to match an inquiry with an undelivered item.

Our recent audit report looked at the MRC’s effectiveness at handling customer inquiries and managing items it received. We found that Postal Service sales and service associates need to better instruct customers on filing an inquiry. We also found the MRC did not track how many inquiries resulted in items returned to customers because it did not have procedures to capture and analyze inquiry data.

Also, the Postal Service did not sufficiently oversee the contractor responsible for auctioning unclaimed items at the MRC or fully log and reconcile items sent for auction, the report said.

We are looking for feedback on your specific experience with the Mail Recovery Center or auction process. Do you have any experience with the Mail Recovery Center? Do you see ways to strengthen the process?

Have you ever participated in the auction process? If yes, what works well? What could be improved?

Report a lost package.

1/28/17 I shipped 27 boxes (total cost $1500) from deceased daughter's 80906 location to 30127. 1 marked media came to me 2/3/17 as a cut out portion with mail label stating no contents. This means the box was never shipped and remained in 80906. I've filed forms online talked to my local PO to no avail. This box contained medical records legal binder music CDs music sheets a FedEx envelope addressed to myself funeral programs death certificates photos sheet music books etc. it was the most important of all boxes shipped and the only one marked media! It was not insured as I was told if no receipts then cannot claim. All items are not replaceable and invaluable to our family. The ATL MCR states could not locate. Thus still in CO. There are no phone numbers that are of any help! To note that this has already happen before in Sep 2016 where 3 boxes sent media from 80906 containing books to our granddaughters that arrived as empty folded boxes staying no contents. This happened again earlier last year to another person sent from same zip. I believe the USPS needs to seriously look into 80906 and investigate what's going on there! When I called the mailing agency to let them know of this, their first words were that "they (USPS) stole it". Evidently it is very common there. Plus this is a military town. I inquired with other locals and many had the same response. Stolen! Really? It had a tracking number in which it stated delivered!!! Yet only the portion with label was delivered! What a joke the tracking is! This box was heavy duty 36# and sealed all over very well. Even if it was dropped it would have withstood it. Other boxes sent weighed that or more and made it. It's just the media mail since USPS is allowed to open it. Even if media mail contains items not acceptable the USPS has the responsibility to forward it asking for the extra postage which has never happened as it is easier to simply cut out the mailing label and send stamped no contents. Unacceptable and wrong in so many ways. The contents of this particular box also can lead to identity theft as there were so many legal docs and medical docs inside with information. Items in box contained addresses and names so shouldn't have been hard to locate someone to send it to. So if we experience any type of indentity fraud do I blame the USPS on it? So what's a mother to do in such a case as this? USPS has taken the one and only box that was of dire importance to me and our family. Furious and heartbroken at the same time. Needless to say, I will no longer put my trust with anything mailed or shipped via USPS and begin to only use UPS or FedEx and at a much higher cost knowing my packages will arrive and can be tracked responsibly. I truly hope someone at OIG will read this but sadly I have no faith that anything will come of this.

I sent three packages at to the same address within a two week time frame. Two or the three packages arrived. The first (small) box I shipped (3/3/17), never arrived. But, the packages I sent the following week arrived. I would really like to know what happened to the package.

post charges for priority mail no promises on delivery then package leaves an area on locked usps shipping truck and when you check tracking it says in transit to destination and then it ends there no one knows where it is ! seems to me they have thieves in department that loads mail or the drivers that deliver the mail this is just my observation !

Seems different capabilities of the USPS are not working together or lack proper systems for sharing information. I have had a search in since 12/30/2016 for a lost holiday Priority Mail package. Among the items I documented in the search request was "Personal check for $300 drawn on US Bank account. Made out to Jxxxx & Jxxxxx Sxxxxx. Check was placed inside already mentioned greeting card." I have had repeated update emails telling me the package could not be located and requesting further info. Today I got a 1st class letter dated 2/22/2017 from USPS Mail Recovery Center telling me a "letter" was forwarded to them and opened according to its rules. At the bottom of the letter from the Recovery Center was a printed image of a personal check drawn on US Bank for $300 made out to Jxxxx & Jxxxxx Sxxxxx!!!! I'm not certain they only had the greeting card/letter or the entire shipped package. So the Mail Recovery Center on 2/22/2017 had at least one of the items documented in my lost package search exactly as I described it meanwhile I continue to get status updates on lost package search that the package cannot be found. Why are there not procedures and/or systems in place to compare information obtained at the Mail Recovery Center with Lost Package search requests? At a minimum, my info as the shipper identically matched the account name and address on the personal check. While I appreciate the information that the check has been shredded, I am curious about the other contents of the original package some of which had sentimental value. I wish there was a way to update my Lost Package Search request with the reference number from the Mail Recovery Center in an attempt to manually provide the linkage needed.

Mailed a 33 lb. 9.2 oz. case of textbooks using media mail to a school 10 miles away in Virginia. Package transited Billings, MT and Denver, CO to a USPS distribution center in Maryland that designated it Dead Mail and sent it to a mail recovery center. This info is known from USPS tracking. Obviously the tracking number is still on the box or the status could not be posted to it. **1. My business e-mail address is associated with the tracking number. I got status e-mails. Why not simply contact me if sender or delivery info is needed?///// **2. Using the usps.com web site search tool is clumsy and does not lead to useful information. I was directed to the "wrong" on-line form to fill out and had to complete it before the "system" let me know I was in the wrong place. Could not find the right form after much searching. Usps.com search results are pitifully unorganized.///// **3. I tried to call the USPS help line, a poorly automated system that is far from helpful. The best it could do was tell me my tracking number was for a package sent to mail recovery--no option to pursue getting the package back. Called back and tried following several useless alternative paths. The machine finally told me I could speak with a person. Last evening, I was informed the wait time was 40 to 50 minutes. Trying again first thing this morning--after 11 minutes trying to get past the automation--I was informed the wait time was 4 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes.///// **4. After my first try yesterday with the call-in help line, I tried again on usps.com. Finally, stumbled on the right web page to file a lost mail Search Request. The input page did not work right at first, and I had to reenter info more than once, especially to attach images showing the product in the shipment. Submitted the form and sometime later received a Search ID e-mail. But nowhere on the web site or in the e-mail does it say what to expect next and, particularly, when to expect any progress on the matter from USPS.///// **5. Went to the local PO where I mailed the package. The supervisor told me she could not help me other than to hold up a multiple-generation fuzzy photocopy of an address and phone number for the Atlanta Mail Recovery Center. After I told her I was not able to memorize the information, she lent me a pen so I could write it down myself. Lucky I had paper. I specifically asked whether she had a form I could fill out. She said they don't handle that at her PO. Shocking! Arrogant, unhelpful and even hostile! Can't be bothered. Should be fired.///// **6. Called the Atlanta processing center phone number--rang more than a dozen times unanswered.///// **7. Called the USPS help phone number again and somehow followed a path that got me to the Topeka Operations & Materials Customer Service Center. Finally! A human being named Leah answered the phone. She is mailing me a form to submit to (try to?) recover my property. Leah was also very helpful in telling me that none of the basic information a customer would want was available to her or anywhere she could locate on USPS information resources available to her. Boy, it would be nice to know how long it might take to even get a response after submitting forms./////

Nice, so my $170 28lb item with tracking number that just disappeared from the system will end up end up on ebay. Just swell. How the heck can you loose a 28lb box!!!!! Looking at all the folks who bothered to post on this site I wonder if a single one had their issue resolved. I think Ill point my congressman at this site.

I mailed family heirlooms to myself. One of the packages delivered to me was crushed and half the contents were missing. I went to the local post office to let them know and find out how to locate my lost items. The books that are missing are irreplaceable. So far no one has heard a thing. I have my tracking # and the crushed box along with receipts. Attempts to do anything online have been futile. I just want the books back.

I put 2 stamps on a Christmas card and added 2 gift cards inside. My sister-in-law didn't received her gift. I suspect the problem was in Atlanta because I mailed the same thing to my other sister-in-law and she received hers in Virginia. I am so discouraged over this!

Thanks, Lisl Hacker

Twice now, when sending birthday cards with gift cards in them, they have disappeared. Both cards had multiple Forever stamps, and were dropped into the box right outside of the post office. At least your card arrived.. I am so incredibly frustrated with the Miami Beach USPS mail, that I plan on using FedEx or UPS with all future mailings.

I was sent a package and checked the tracking # and it says that my package was delivered and it wasn't. Now no one seems to know where my package is. I don't understand why USPS won't require the carriers to get a signature when delivering bulky packages, if they can do with certified letters then they should do it with packages as well. You would think that the USPS would want to cover their behinds.

I sent my mother an envelope for Christmas. Inside the Christmas card was 2 Cracker Barrel restaurant gift cards each one valued at 25.00 dollars. Two weeks later only the front of the envelope was delivered with a note from the Post master saying "Sorry about your mail" My question is,Where can I find out the location of these gift cards ? Do you have a lost and found or do the employees just take the product they find !! Where can I find my gift cards I paid for !?

A Christmas card with money was sent to a street address which I own but there is no mail box on that property. The envelope had the correct name but the street address number written incorrectly ended in 8 instead of 6. Santa was written in the area where the sender information is written. The Christmas card was mailed to me on the 20th or 21st of December.

All the cards sent with using mail boxes arrived yet the 2 I sent through the actual post office here on post never arrived.

I am trying to get an email address for USPS customer relations, specifically at the Mail Recovery Center. I've tried numerous times through phone numbers provided by website to reach someone. Basically, I recently shipped a bat out which ended up at the MRC and was not located. I'm trying to reach someone to get some more information in an attempt to locate my item but seems impossible.

First, your MRC phone number is extremely inefficient. You advertise 800-275-8777 as the number for the Atlanta MRC. I defy you to reach the MRC thru that number. I'm trying to reach the MRC or lost and found to recovery 4 money cards that were mailed inadvertantly with Christmas cards. No address, just names of each grandchild on the envelope. PLease contact me so I can enter a claim. Joe O'Neill

We were supposed to have been delivered a package of our family and home videos that just got back from a company who transferred the VHS tapes to DVDs. There was unpaid postage due to us changing addresses in the same town. We went to the post office to pick it up and pay for it before the "return to sender" date and it was nowhere to be found. The company who sent it has not received it back and now our family memories are gone FOREVER.

To Whom it May Concern: I ordered an item from a company over a year ago. The package stayed at the 'shipped' status for 2 weeks. I called the company that I ordered my item from and told them that the status had not changed so I waited another 2 weeks. I then requested for a store credit and they 'said' that they attached it to my account. A year later I decided to use my store credit and they are telling me that they do not have a record of the tracking information because it is older than 6 months. I am reporting fraud because the order did not pass the shipping status with USPS. The company did not help me and since the tracking is so old. USPS did not help me either. What are my options?

I made a claim for an order I received from overseas; 10 of a collection of books were missing and when I received my package the box was in bad shape and re-taped; made the claim, went through all the steps and never heard a word from them, so I thought I lost these valuables books, then while searching for these volumes online I found that a Amazon seller has exactly these out of print and foreign books for sale and bought them from an auction site that sells unclaimed lost packages from usps, and he bought them about a month before the 60-day window; so USPS turned my books to the auction in Atlanta while I was still trying to get these people to actually look for them in New York. USPS you should be ashamed of the horrible service you provide and your lazy and unqualified personnel.

I shipped a box that contained valuable OPM information plus medals (purple heart/medal of honor) that my Uncle Clair Harvey Lane gave his life for in WWII. It was shipped from Davenport, IA to Shippensbug, PA. The box top was cut off in Des Moines and sent to me but do not know what happened to the contents inside the box. I have talked with Customer Care plus submitted a detailed Parcel Search Request to the Mail Recovery Center (MRC) in Atlanta, GA. I got the request back in a short time with "NOT FOUND" at the bottom of the form. These items cannot be replaced. How can these items be lost? The box description was submitted so why can't they find the box? The items should still be in the box. Unfortunately, there is no way to contact the MRC. I hope they haven't auctioned my valuable items off - wanted to forward them to my son to keep my Uncle's legacy alive.

2 Boxes of valuable books were LOST in August enroute from Utah to Texas. I have filed all online forms including pictures of each book and cost of book and even mailed forms to the MRC. I have called for 3 months and no one answers the phones. I have flown from Texas to Atlanta only to find out the MRC has relocated and NO ONE knows where to. I have tried endlessly for 3 days while here in Atlanta to speak with ANYONE regarding my items yet, no one answers their phones nor are they at their desks. These books are my son's resource library for his occupation and must have these! The MRC is NOT responding to any forms of communication to let me know if they are even looking for these items. There is NO customer service what so ever. I am desperate and am willing to look at every single item in the building myself to locate these items. Why is no one responding?

My mail service in Dallas is "third world" at best. For four years, 100s complaints in person, over the phone, online, I still receive mail for people who do not live at this address. Stickers have been placed in my mail box. I live in the worst area, next to South Oak Cliff/Dallas where mail doesn't even get delivered partially due to loose dog. Two different times, my mail was bundled, not at my request, and delivered days late. When I reported this, twice, the people at the other end of the phone gasped. Never heard of that! My mail goes to neighbors' houses. I get their mail. Recently, my birthday card was returned as "incorrect" address, which it was not. Belated birthday greetings at 72 better than nada. At least I'm not pushing dirt & maybe the mail service will improve. Not holding my breath!

We shipped 8 boxes from California to Kentucky in June. 6 made it. We filed missing mail reports on line and listed the contents. We then received the actual labels from the two boxes with forms attached that wanted us to list the contents. We listed the contents and mailed those back in. One of our on line search requests expired (2 months has passed). With the specific list of graduate level textbooks supposedly on file as being the contents of the boxes that have no address labels now, I would assume that when they're opened they will be easily matched up to us. But so far, we've had no word and with one search request expired and the other about to, I fear we'll never recover the $1200+ set of textbooks and they'll be auctioned off. I am frustrated reading the report about the low percentage of mail returned once it is sent to the MRC.

How do I contact the MRC to inquire about a package? I have been advised by multiple personnel at USPS, both locally and on the phone at the call center to contact the MRC. I have filed a missing mail request, twice. I have a case number. I have tracking. I am supposed to hear from a manager in 48-72 hours to help me find this package, but I was also advised to contact the MRC. HOW? Help. Please. Bermuda Triangle? Santa Claus? I don't know what else to do but have a sense of humor about this. There are a thousand messages just like mine posted below, and people have lost things that are much more significant than my measly pile of academic books. However, the problem is the same. We would like to find the things you lost. We would like to stop annoying you with posts about Santa Claus and the Bermuda Triangle. I am sure you are a wonderful person and I have no ill will toward you specifically, I just need some help. Jingle bells, holly and ivy, and all that is sugar coated plum fairies. Peace and good will to all men. Please help!
