Shedding a Light on USPS Service Performance

Date: 06/14/21 | Category: Delivery & Collection

You probably have heard a lot recently about the pandemic and other issues causing problems with mail delivery, with some people saying it takes weeks for packages and letters to arrive. Maybe you even experienced problems yourself. Maybe you’ve been getting your mail on time and wondering what all the complaints are about.

Did you ever wish you could get a better understanding of how the Postal Service is doing across the country? Well, now you can. We recently launched a new service performance webpage that includes an interactive map displaying quarterly data on the Postal Service’s service performance around the country.

You can filter the data by time period, geography, mail class, or service standard. Want to see on-time performance for presorted First-Class Mail that is supposed to be delivered in two days? You can. Maybe you’re interested in focusing on Marketing Mail in New York? You can filter the map to see that also.

We will continue to update this page quarterly as the Postal Service releases new data. The interactive map is not all the website features; it also functions as a one-stop-shop for all the OIG’s published and upcoming work on service performance. So, take a look and tell us what you think

I sent a time-sensitive certified letter on Feb. 24, 2023 from Somers WI to a business in Jackson MI. It is still not delivered! Just what did I pay the USPS for when it can't even deliver one letter (certified) from WI to MI without sending it to the west coast first, then letting it sit, apparently, in Detroit. All calls to the Jackson MI post office are eventually dropped and NEVER answered, day after day. Maybe you should check if your employees there in Jackson are actually going to work at all! Can't believe how bad this experience has been. At the least you should refund me for my certified letter. The only thing you have "certified" is how really inept you have become!!!!! You and everyone at USPS should be, but probably aren't, deeply ashamed of your poor quality work! James.

This looks like it's based on USPS self-reported data. They outright lie ALL THE TIME. I've lost count of how many packages were marked in their tracking system as "Undeliverable Address" or "Held at Customer Request", meanwhile Amazon gets stuff to my porch just fine. There's no way to actually escalate an issue to see it resolved, and there's no accountability for poor performance. Missing packages just wind up hurting small businesses who have to provide refunds or see lost business.

The USPS phone bank and website (as far as registering and navigation and filing forms) are both extremely cumbersome, not helpful, and seem to deliberately throw you into a loop. Is this on purpose, or am I imagining it?

Thanks for your message. We are an independent agency of the Postal Service and unfortunately can't help with lost or damaged mail. You can file a claim with the Postal Service at https://faq.usps.com/s/

I purchase items online from businesses that use priority mail. The USPS declares that this service delivers your pkg within 1-3 business days. This does not jive with my experience. I am still waiting on package that was mailed 7 days ago from Colorado to California. My experience with priority mail is that it takes an avg of 6-7 days.

PS I recently asked a customer service agent at my local P.O. about the rate difference between Priority and reg mail, the conversation did not go well.

They claimed that I was making it up.

The USPS is a government agency, apparently allowed to bully, lie or refuse to answer your inquiry.

How do they stay in business?

Subsidized by the American taxpayer... of course.

The USPS needs to get the act together!!!
I am sick and tired of substandard performance, very bad customer service and the excuse of “COVID”
If it wasnt for Amazon I bet you would be closing.

My experience with the USPS was satisfactory until about six months ago. Since that time their service has deteriorated steadily. I've experienced multiple instances of lost mail, misdirected mail, and packages that appear on the USPS site as having been delivered, but that don't show up until days later. On one instance I found a letter on my front lawn for the fellow down the street. (It was from the IRS, so despite his dismay at receiving it, things would've been worse if it had blown away into the gutter.)

The post office handling my zip code in Texas (75220) is a hit-or-miss affair. I've sometimes gotten outstanding service, while at other times everyone there seems lethargic and utterly disinterested. I try not to go down there unless absolutely necessary.

It's no surprise that I've been using Federal Express much more lately.

Service is non-existent from USPS. In the past few months almost everything I've ordered has either had unexplained delays, fake "delivery attempted", super long transit times, or as in the case of 6 of my packages over the past couple of months, vanished from the face of the earth. To top it all off, no one seems to care at USPS. I open cases and they are just closed or ignored. Nothing is ever done in any kind of attempt to locate what happened. I wish people would stop using them. I don't care if I have to pay double to at least feel secure that I will actually get what I'm ordering. Myself, I wouldn't ship a dog turd through USPS.

I know what you mean, Matt. I'm having similar issues with the Postal Service. They have lost packages AND broke items with fragile clearly printed on the box.

I'm sorry for your experience. It's terrible

Lost, late and mishandled mail has nothing to do with the pandemic. Stop blaming it. It's so 2020 of you. Why are you stuck in the past with old technology and inefficient service. I hope the USPS is soon abolished and private companies are allowed to deliver mail. They deliver packages right to my door - not come collection box or post office miles away because the package won't fit into the tiny box. And they do this with a smile, and still make a profit.

Wow! An interactive map of the United States Postal Service's complete and utter failure of an agency! By the way, the foundational measurements of your interactive map are flawed at the core. "On Time" delivery means the mail parcel was delivered.......somewhere. Doesn't mean it was to the correct location. Time does not equal accuracy. Honestly, the American public would rather you be accurate than fast. Leave fast to UPS, a real logistics company. Trying to help citizens "understand" the USPS by "shedding light" with flawed analytics is further confirming how low this agency has fallen from the good old days of postal workers taking pride in having mail delivered accurately AND on time. The USPS doesn't even understand the crucial problem of mail being delivered to the wrong address, lost, destroyed, etc. They think we care if our mail arrives in 3 days rather than 4. I wonder how many tax dollars went to creating this completely useless "interactive map".

USPS is a scam. Customer service is deliberately unhelpful. I run an online business so shipping is important. There is absolutely no recourse for uninsured lost packages and with insured packages, the effort to plow through all the forms, red tape and delays just to get the refund makes it simply not worth it. It hurts my business and is wrong. Why is this continuing to happen.

I shipped five packages from my APO in Germany 09 May 2022. As of 31 May 2022 they are nowhere to be found and no update since the arrived in Chicago on the 13th of May. How can every possible package be lost. There’s not even a way to contact someone for help or just says make a claim for the insurance. I don’t want the ones I want the items that I shipped because they are all very personal to me.

Sending packages on strange trips. I sent a Package to a Friend who lives in B.C. Canada on May 20th. The package tracing showed it left our post office them for three day's Nothing Suddenly it was in Iowa, which it stayed till it was sent to Mephis Tn, Now the last time I looked Canada isn't south of OHIO! To be even worse That friend has sent me a package which has been back to L.A. California three times now! It had an expected delivery date of May 31,2022. It just left L.A. for the third time on May 30th! Where will these two packages go next is anyones guess! USPS you have some very strange Logistics in deed! Usually when I send packages to B.C. Canada they go from our P.O. to Columbus then to Chicagao, and from there to Canada

In the last two months I have sent 4 packages to B.C. Canada None seemed to take the same route. Two of the four went through the normal route going from Ohio to Chicago then on to Canada. One went from Ohio to Pa, to New Jersey, then to Jamacia New york, Back to New Jersey, then Back to Jamacia New your where is sat almost a week before getting to Canada. The last package which was sent on May 20th Went from our local office without tracking for three day's where it ended up in Iowa then on the 29th was sent to Mephis Tn. Canada is NORTH not South usps! Then theres a package that is still in transit from a friend in B.C, Canada Which has been back and fourth to L.A.California Three time now. It had a expected delivery date for May 31, 2022 But tracking showed it left L.A. again on May 30th.
