Shedding a Light on USPS Service Performance

Date: 06/14/21 | Category: Delivery & Collection

You probably have heard a lot recently about the pandemic and other issues causing problems with mail delivery, with some people saying it takes weeks for packages and letters to arrive. Maybe you even experienced problems yourself. Maybe you’ve been getting your mail on time and wondering what all the complaints are about.

Did you ever wish you could get a better understanding of how the Postal Service is doing across the country? Well, now you can. We recently launched a new service performance webpage that includes an interactive map displaying quarterly data on the Postal Service’s service performance around the country.

You can filter the data by time period, geography, mail class, or service standard. Want to see on-time performance for presorted First-Class Mail that is supposed to be delivered in two days? You can. Maybe you’re interested in focusing on Marketing Mail in New York? You can filter the map to see that also.

We will continue to update this page quarterly as the Postal Service releases new data. The interactive map is not all the website features; it also functions as a one-stop-shop for all the OIG’s published and upcoming work on service performance. So, take a look and tell us what you think

I have no faith in the USPS. I mailed a envelope via Certified Mail on the 02/14/2022. As of today (03/05/2022) the tracking shows its still in transit. The envelope was mailed from a Post Office center in Riverside CA to Sacramento CA. This is approximately a distance of 440 miles. 19 days later and the envelope is still in transit. Total incompetence. I actually have more faith in the DMV than I do in the USPS.

USPS is hands-down the worst agency or company that I have ever dealt with. Deliveries almost never go as planned and packages get lost with alarming frequency. I have never interacted with even a single USPS employee who shows any sense of urgency or seems to care about absolutely anything. They are ALL smugly confident that they are completely untouchable and that they have some sort of inalienable right to do literally nothing and get paid for it. I can see no way whatsoever how USPS could somehow be reformed or redeemed. The only thing that should be done is close USPS down. They truly are that worthless.

I received a bill today postmarked 1/10/22…37 days ago without counting Sunday’s. Another piece of mail took 22 days to arrive from an area I could’ve walked from over that span of time. Both pieces were in poor shape and one had a piece of the yellow sticker you’d see marking the envelope with a message like “wrong address/addressee unknown”….but there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way it was addressed. What is going on?!?

We sent Certified large envelope to our cpa last Monday. It was expected to arrive in 2-3 days, but it's still somewhere "in transit". The person in charge - De Voss should be fire immediately.

I sent a package on January 5th. Tracking shows that it had arrived in the correct city by January 17th and was "out for delivery." But it was never delivered. February 18th, one month later, and it's still out for delivery? This is ridiculous. Tampering with or stealing mail is a federal crime. Someone needs to manage this better.

The service I get from the usps went from pretty darn good, to extremely poor!! It takes three or more days longer to receive a package from the posatal service than it does from UPS, or FedEx from the same city. It’s has gone from being frustrating to becoming an absolute joke. Congress needs to address this issue, or completely defund them. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

I live in Jonesboro, AR and I have had around 4 packages lost in the last 2 weeks of things ordered through Amazon, one being shipped within my own state yesterday, has been declared lost today. I wish I knew what the issue was, because I don't want all those refunds, I want the items I've been waiting on!!

I think a lot of people here are lashing out in anger without really trying to figure out what the problem is. Yes USPS has misplaced packages for us a lot, but saying lazy overpaid morons is a little bit silly. Your packages don’t get lost because your local mail carrier or postal office is having issues (I’ve never had a problem with them) the issue seems to be how they are sorting and shipping them from office to office. This is most likely due to sorting policies and systems, not lazy workers, they are actually probably overworked at those hubs and do the best they can knowing it’s still not going to be good enough. The debate of wether the post office is self sufficient or not isn’t that easy, does anyone have a full congressional budget that passed that can show how much and when money was sent to the post office?

Also “overbloated government agency”? Most of them scrape by with less and less each year due to congressional arguments. I know this one for a fact.

Don’t get mad at your local postman. I’m sure they are trying to get it to you, Their vehicles are packed with boxes, they drive past houses where the mailbox is blocked by a garbage can etc. if they have to get out it makes the time per house quadruple. Also they just want to get home to their families like you o

While I agree that we are lashing out at the wrong individuals at times because of our frustrations. I also agree name calling and such is a little much.. however as for the post office being overworked.. that is 100% on them! The postal service continues to take contracts with other couriers to complete local deliveries know ful well they are not staffed to do so. So therefore knowingly taking on more work load than they are able to just to make money. Ultimately coming at a cost to the consumer.

Mr. Doe thanks for your insight. You are spot on with your comments. I am one of those out there humping it as best as we can with what we are provided. Bottom line? The Postal service is very poorly managed and funded in every way.

I have no complaints about my postal delivery person.
However, I will say that at the post office I deal with for work, I disagree with your statement. Every single time I have to go in there I am made to wait. Not just a minute, but close to 20 minutes, every single time. I'm working, I need to make a quick stop to ship things out for work, or grab stamps, but it is never quick. My boss questions me every time I have to run to the post office, because it takes so long. Why does it take so long? Because the postal workers are in there gossiping and looking at their phones. When you try and get their attention on you, the customer, they quite rudely exclaim, "I will be with you when I am finished." I saw another comment about the "untouchable attitude" and that is exactly it. In that particular post office, they exude that attitude and they are extremely rude. This is a rural town, so there is no other option for when I have to go for work. The employees in the actual post office should do better.

I shipped my package on Jan 27 2022 from Maryland to Ceder Rapids, IA using 2 day priority mail. The mail arrived Des Moines, IA on Jan 29, but for some reason it was shipped back to Philadelphia and was stuck there on Feb 4. It was supposed to delivered on Jan 31.

I placed 2 stamps on a business envelope (1 was all that was needed) going from South Central MA to Lynbrook, NY. we are going on 15 days, and still my mail has not yet been delivered. 2 words for this horror show. DeJoy and trump. I have never experienced anything like this before these 2 idiots came along. Go ahead, blame Biden, for this mess, that's what republicans do. They finger point rather then admit their wrong doings. Get rid of Dejoy and along with our mail we will once again fly in the right direction. This was trumps doing. Getting a fool in there that has no clue what the price of mailing a post card costs. The USPS had better stand up for the people who are supplying them with their benefits. Get rid of Dejoy and we can once again get our mail to where we intended it to go.

Mailed a first class package going from Maryland to Illinois. Mailed on 1/10/22. It went to a North Carolina distribution center and hasn't been scanned since. Delivery was expected 1/15/22. Seems there are issues with every package I send or receive from the USPS.

What I don't understand is how it's deemed allowed and acceptable that this company is basically scamming people out of hundreds of dollars, when they can't even do their job as it's listed. I shipped a package off 12/23, for over a hundred dollars in shipping prices. Not once was it ever mentioned to me just how delayed the package would be, and how god awful the service is. I haven't shipped a package with USPS since early 2019, lesson learned, I am NEVER EVER using USPS again, if I can help it. This is absolutely ridiculous for a mailing company, and the people in charge of this should be ashamed of themselves. They can make up whatever excuse they want with the pandemic, but every other mailing company is doing just fine, and actually delivering their packages as stated.

I did not pay for priority mail for my things to be this delayed, absolutely disgusting. Over a month waiting, when the person I sent the package to, theirs arrived to me in less than a week with FedEx. INTERNATIONALLY. I really wish I had known better, but I guess I know now.
I'm tired of talking to the shitty phone operators too that can't even help you for what it's worth sitting on the phone for an hour. I feel used, and dejected. The package I sent contained easily breakable and expensive things, and the next thing I'm expecting is to hear a report of something broken. This was something that was supposed to be special and a gift to my boyfriend, but now it has become an actual nightmare and hell to go through. Have no clue how y'all are still up and running, when the majority of you are so bad at your jobs.

Why did you wait until 12/23 to send an international package. I guess you sent it by USPS because it was cheaper than FedEx or UPS. Also foreign customs and their mail delivery service could have slowed down the package.

People, including myself, complain about how slow their mail/packages get to them. Like all the other delivery services there ability to direct their packages properly is horrible. I order from amazon and I track my packages. I live in Toledo Oh and a package will arrive at three different stations in Toledo on three different days before it's delivered to me. REALLY! In my minds eye that is why we have zip codes so it can be delivered to me on time instead of wasting money transferring it from station to station only to go back to the first station it originally went to. In the day of computers you would think there would be a way to direct packages to the right postal station instead of multiple ones in the same city. Sorry for the long rant!

I don't even get my mail anymore. My local post office is useless, so is the 800 number. I have had to change all my mail to go to my work address and even then mail gets lost. What a pathetic service. I try to avoid using USPS at all costs.

My calendar order shipped to Jacksonville,Florida and stayed between a distribution center and another distribution center at same city for 10 days then shipped within 100 miles of my house and been at that facilities for 5 days. I contacted seller for refund because I want my calendar and they are posting it may be lost.

Charging someone for a service and not providing said service is theft, plain and simple. You would be crazy to pay for so-called “Priority Mail” nowadays considering that the USPS doesn’t honor the 1-3 day delivery you pay EXTRA for. Businesses and private individuals alike should abandon using the USPS completely considering the much better service provided by UPS and FedEx.

Complete and utter incompetence. In the last few months I’ve had multiple packages shipped to the nearby hub, only to then be sent off to another regional hub hundreds of miles away, then returned to the nearby hub in a few days. Any private company run as shoddily as the USPS would have gone bankrupt years ago. Instead it’s bloated with tax payer money and remains a joke.
