Shedding a Light on USPS Service Performance

Date: 06/14/21 | Category: Delivery & Collection

You probably have heard a lot recently about the pandemic and other issues causing problems with mail delivery, with some people saying it takes weeks for packages and letters to arrive. Maybe you even experienced problems yourself. Maybe you’ve been getting your mail on time and wondering what all the complaints are about.

Did you ever wish you could get a better understanding of how the Postal Service is doing across the country? Well, now you can. We recently launched a new service performance webpage that includes an interactive map displaying quarterly data on the Postal Service’s service performance around the country.

You can filter the data by time period, geography, mail class, or service standard. Want to see on-time performance for presorted First-Class Mail that is supposed to be delivered in two days? You can. Maybe you’re interested in focusing on Marketing Mail in New York? You can filter the map to see that also.

We will continue to update this page quarterly as the Postal Service releases new data. The interactive map is not all the website features; it also functions as a one-stop-shop for all the OIG’s published and upcoming work on service performance. So, take a look and tell us what you think

The USPS has become one of the worst agencies in history. Lost packages, packages going to to other states, misrouted items, late deliveries, etc, etc, etc. The performance standard that was once the model of all government agencies has become an agency that should be phased out and shut down. The government should contract with UPS or FEDEX for mail deliver.

For the past few deliveries, I had not received my packages until 3-4 days after the expected delivery dates. Last week I opened a package tracking case asking for an explanation as to how my recent package was shipped from Texas , routed to Maryland (which I'm one state away in Virginia), and was routed back to Texas before arriving on 5-21-22. In hindsight, it was a mistake because I got an automated response today saying the package was scanned as delivered, and I never got an explanation on what I had asked them. I'm at home 24/7 because I live with family who are still at a high risk for COVID, so I don't have anything to really do, so when I'm given an expected delivery date, I am waiting pretty much all day until the package arrives. I cannot work either in fear that I'll bring any form of COVID home. I don't know where I can go to make a complaint, but I'll try here just to see what happens. It probably won't do anything, as the postal service isn't very reliable anymore.

I wish there was another option. I’m understanding to the time that it takes because I know there’s a lot of work and not always the coverage but 90% of the time I have something delivered to my mailbox, I do not receive it, even though it says delivered to mailbox. I have had packages delivered that were damaged beyond comprehension and I constantly receive the mail of my neighbors throughout my entire apartment complex. We have a parcel box but it is absolutely never used. I have complained multiple times over the past few years and have never received a response. Nobody ever answers the phone if you call and when I try to file claim for missing packages the website always tells me there was an error and to try back later. If I can’t call, I can’t email, I can’t file a claim, and even if I do nothing is ever done, then what is the point. Just say you’re a terrible service and we do not care to do better. It’s a shame that such an important service is one of the worst examples of service there is.

Privatize USPS already. Maybe then there will be some accountability. Go paperless when you can because the reliability of the Postal Service is hot garbage.

What the hell has happened to the postal service? I’ve long since given up worrying about receiving packages in a timely manner. Every time I see a package of mine hits the Jersey City hub my stomach tightens up. It generally means that the delivery will take anywhere from an extra 5 to 10 days…..and that’s if your lucky! It’s one thing to see a package take a side trip to your Florida hub; it’s another when you never received the package at all. This has happened 3 times already, this year alone. I’ve reached the point where I now seek out businesses that won’t use the USPS as the shipper. I’ve pressured smaller retailers to ship with ups or fedex; refusing to make a purchase if they were not willing to accommodate me.
You are doing an atrocious job and should be ashamed of yourself; you should resign now before you’ve completely decimated the service.

I am simply appalled at USPS 'service.' I paid for a package to be shipped from Japan three weeks ago. It got to the US in two days and has just been sitting in Chicago since then. This mail is really important but you guys have just decided to screw me over! Then I read online to see hundreds of people have and are experiencing the same frustrations. I really can't believe it. The service at this facility is truly horrible.

Tracking a package supposedly shows when the package was shipped. Updates are not posted accurately and anticipated delivery dates are changed on a daily bases.

USPS is having a going out of business sale thanks to Donal Trump's appointed Republican Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. I am no longer receiving my mail and packages through the USPS, as I did before, prior to Louis DeJoy took over as the Postmaster General. The USPS service is very slow and unreliable. If I didn't know better, the postal workers are throwing away my mail and packages (or taking them for themselves). It's a shame. Before Republican Postmaster General Louis DeJoy took over, the service was reliable and better than FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc. Now, the USPS is non-existent in Fountain, Colorado (Zip Code 80817). They might as well close the Fountain Post Office down, and terminate the USPS as Republican Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is successfully accomplishing.

Post office is terrible now, I literally can’t even use them anymore, I have had to refund a lot of customers for stuff they purchased that never arrived and there is no customer service to even report it to. The last straw was losing my tax return and mortgage payment…I’m done!

The mail service - has never been this bad - i had a 1,000 check that was do to be fwd , left at my door and sat for 2 months ?!
I wonder if my tabs for my car will ever arrive , here in Florida from Michigan.
Parcels and letters seam to wind up in the skip , with little thought or rational thinking on how this cld effect others ?! Does USPS have a personality quiz to gage if ppl are mentally stable to handle the mail & the ramifications if its just thrown asunder ?
With no thought or conscience ????

I really wonder that , since my mail carrier has a personality disorder of sorts , and just does not care if you get ur mail or if its fwd or not.
Pretty frightening state of affairs with so much riding , on the distribution.

I have a package sent to me via express overnight priority. I followed the scans closely from California to Florida. The package was checked in to the Fort Lauderdale sorting facility and then just vanished from that point on. It's been over a week now. I went in person to the sorting facility and they told me the package was not there and they don't know where it is and I should file a claim. This was a very important and irreplacable item and I am desperate. I have called and spoke to many people at the Post Office departments and most say it is probably lost because the scans have just stopped. Even if this package was sent by mistake somewhere else there would be some tracking showing it. How does an express package just disappear ? The label had clear tape on it to protect from water and my address was written on 2 more sides, so 3 total sides. There is no way the label got ripped off by accident so there is no excuse for being lost. I feel if this package does not show up soon it was involved in criminal mischief by the Post Office. Can anyone tell me if they also had issues with the sorting facility in South Florida ? Also, if my express package was supposed to arrive on April 19th and its April 26th now should I worry ? Last known scan was 9am on April 19th at Fort Lauderdale sorting facility. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you for contacting the USPS OIG. We are an independent agency of the Postal Service and unfortunately can't help with lost mail. You can file a claim with the Postal Service at https://www.usps.com/help/welcome.htm

What is a joke is that their target percentage for on time is around 90%, they are counting 1 in 10 being late. Calling their customer service is a joke. I had two packages sent by the same company, starting in the same place and going through the same locations (Canada to NJ). The first one was in LA for over 10 days and I was told by Kathy Randall from their Consumer Advocate's office this was normal for an international shipment. The replacement got from Canada, went through LA and arrived in NJ in four days. If the first one went through normal channels and the sis howe long it takes, how could the second arrive in about a third of the time? Since I asked that question, I have been ignored by there Consumer Advocate's office. Let's face it, lying is a big part of the USPS because no one is held accountable for doing it and when their supposed top customer advocates are so willing to lie, why wouldn't the rest?

For years the Postal Service has been incompetent and could care less what the general public thinks. They only answer to Congress and it seems that Congress could also care less! I have contacted postmasters as well as my congressman with the same results, a form letter. I wonder how many of those they send out every day?
Nothing ever changes from all of the complaints of the people of this nation. I believe that when a business cannot or will not correct the problems, they should be shut down. I believe that a private company could do a much better job.
Since our Congress seems to choose to disregard this problem, I believe our American Public, should start contacting every media outlet that will listen, to effect a change. Since our Congress is elected, maybe the next votes should be given to someone that will listen.

I have a package that was split between DHL and USPS. DHL moved my package from two different countries and to US in 3 days . USPS has had it In transit for over a months. I have gotten very few updates and it was supposed to be delivered today. It was not! Maybe take a page from the successful companies. The expected delivery date was anytime between March 22 and April 11th. I was figuring on the 11th but it’s now the 18th and still don’t have it .

I ordered products online from China and it only took 4 day's to arrive in the US, but now stuck in another post office 451 miles away for 4 days. Plus I am constantly getting my neighbors and other wrong mail. I can understand once or twice, but every week? I am now worried about getting important medication on time.

Most inept agency in the Federal government, and that’s saying something.I’ve called local news stations and done segments on their performance. Lost packages, carrier not checking to see if someone home for signed delivery (nor leaving card in box), non-existent customer service.

When they lose a package they want YOU to describe the box (how would you know what the box looks like….. you never got the damned thing!). Three months later you get an email telling you the search was unsuccessful because you DID NOT ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE THE BOX!

I live in Greenville, NC. Just this morning, a package left Rocky Mount hub and arrived at my destination in Greenville. IT THEN WHEN BACK TO ROCKY MOUNT!

Just visit your local branch. They hire anyone with a beating heart. Apathy rules the day.

About 25% of my packages are lost, and 85% are delivered late. I'm waiting on a package now that was supposed to be delivered 3 days ago. Tracking says it's still over 600 miles away and it took 2 days to go from one facility to another facility only 8 miles away. When I request more information, I'm given the exact information that's on the tracking site and then I'm summarily dismissed. There is absolutely no accountability either. If they lose my package, damage it, or delay it - it costs them nothing. If they lose it, they tell me to contact the shipper - as if the shipper has any idea where it might be. If you look at their efficiency report, all of the actual numbers are redacted. They claim they are improving, but they redact all the information in the audits that would prove that (I wonder why?). Seems to me, if they were really improving, they'd be happy to share the information. As for cost, I can send something UPS or FedEx for nearly the same price, but it actually gets there on time - and if it doesn't, they can tell me EXACTLY where it is and/or what happened. The USPS is a freaking joke!
