Safety is a key component of all Postal Service operations, activities, and facilities. Nonetheless, safety issues do occur in the Postal Service as in other organizations. Recently, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors found electrical safety violations in several Postal Service Processing and Distribution Facilities (P&DCs).

Electrical Safety issues at Postal P&DCs identified by OSHA include:

•Electricity problems in facilities
•Failure to adequately lock out machines' power sources to prevent unexpected start-ups
•Inadequate training for employees exposed to electrical hazards
•Failure to provide electrical protective equipment to protect employees from arc-flash hazards and electrical current
•Failure to use appropriate safety signs, safety symbols or accident prevent tags to warn employees about electrical hazards

As a result of the findings, OSHA has announced that it will inspect the over 300 P&DCs nationwide.

But OSHA does not consider only electricity–related safety. Other areas of concern include:

•Employee workplace rights
•Chemical Hazard Communication
•How To Prepare For Workplace Emergencies
•Personal Protective Equipment
•Biological agents

There are also many instances of praise for the Postal Service from OSHA including:

A 2009 inspection for safety levels at the El Paso Postal Distribution Center that resulted in merit recognition in the Voluntary Protection Programs for its employee health and safety achievements.

Also in 2009, the Postal Service's Evergreen Detached Carrier Unit in Hillsboro, OR, received OSHA's highest safety recognition award.

    Not sure if this is a violation of standard practice for the postal service or not. I worked as a holiday casual worker over the Christmas season sorting packages. Neither I, nor any of the other holiday help, received any safety training. Is this normal. or were we supposed to get trained?

    I'm a carrier in Locust Grove on a rural route. And we are being made to load our vehicles crammed to the top and sides full with no vision of the road behind or on the sides and now even being told to put pkgs on our front seat which would be insane because we are already endangering our lives when pulling out on the highway so full and with blocked vision. Who can i call to help? Any info would be appreciated.

    I am concerned for all USPS delivery employees’ safety now that the time change and holiday season have arrived. In offices acrosss the country, carriers are risking accidents, injury to themselves and others, and predators (human and animal) by delivering in the dark daily. There is no reason or excuse for this as it can be prevented. The safety offices seem to be worthless and carriers’ lives and well-being are in jeopardy.

    looking for contact info for safety and risk management and contact info for the ergonomics program so I can get approval to use a red grabber I made, So I'm not bending over all the time. Here are the reasons for it's use and why I feel I should be able to use it. *ERGONOMICS* 1. Placing the door stop in place at the bottom of the door. 2. lifting the toilet seat up or placing it down. (There is a lot of toilet stalls at Indy PD&C) (I used a different caged wire and shorten it so it would grip tighter to flush the toilet) 3. Flushing the toilet 4 picking up trash. ( we can't mixed the color because of cross contamination. *SAFETY* 1. The less you walk around and bend in the stall the less likely you will have issues with *TRIPS, SLIPS AND FALLS.* (Because of possible water and urine on the floor) Also in keeping in line with the Government Service Code of ethics which state *ARTICLE 4* "Seek to find and employ more efficient and economical ways of getting task accomplished." Please direct me to whom I contact to implement this idea, I seek no monetary gain But don't want someone stealing my idea. thank you

    Id like to know who choises our uniforms....the new shirts are made of heavier material and it does not breathe....they are not too bad in the winter except that they're heavy....but for summer they are not good for us we need to go back to the old material.....service talks right now are all about heat safety......wear light colored breathable clothing......but we cant because we dont have a light colored breathable shirt availabe.....can someone point me in the right direction or can you do something these shirts are a safety hazard thanks

    I am a safety officer at our office. I have put in several complains about our truck parking lot. It has so many holes and cracks in it that almost every day carriers are twisting their ankles and/or tripping. We have been asking for years that they fix the parking lot, but all they say is that "there is no money in the budget for that". You would think that management would care about the carriers' safety.

    I am an employee of the Michigan Metroplex P & DC, Pontiac, MI, 48340. Recently, on January 17, 2016, Management installed a badge reader to GET OUT OF ALL THE DOORS front of the facility, the only employee entrance. This is a definite violation of the OSHA Safety Rules and Regulations for buildings. This would be catastrophic in case of a fire.

    I think you need to start with the llv and the DOT violations first. We tell our postmaster we have no brakes. We tell her our tires have zero tread and they are racing slicks. Nothing happens. We are told we have no choice but to take our llv's or lose our jobs. Do you have any idea how terrifying it is to drive an llv, with no brakes or decent tires, on a sheet of ice and snow in WI? You took our cars away and forced us into these steel death boxes! When we took our own cars on the rural routes, we were much safer. You forced us into the llv with no heat or a/c. The least you could do is maintain the damn things and at least comply with DOT!

    When i was done with training and went to my assigned post office all safety went out the window. I was told that i didn't need to wear my seat belt, i didn't need to use the parking break, i didn't need to do a walk around my vehicle, that i could do u turns, that i could reverse whenever i wanted, that going a little fast was okay, and i didn't need to stop at stop signs but to yield at them. All of this was told to me because it would take to long to do this and deliver the mail. I had a route that they say should have taken about eight hours to do and that included casing dps and flats (over 500 stops), sorting packages loading the truck delivering mail picking up packages, and the time to drive. That's why so many accidents happen. I have witnessed postal workers speeding, getting mail ready to go in the box, and getting packages ready while driving, scanning packages, not wearing seat belts, talking on phone and most of this happens while they aren't watching the road. They see the faster you get done the more money you make. If you finish a eight hour route in five hours you get paid for three hours while going home. Nobody cares for the public's safety once your out of training and that is a big problem that needs to be addressed. i am no longer an employee due to the fact i didn't want to break laws and rules set by the postal company.

    Thanks for the inquiry, Brian, Employees are required to immediately report safety hazards, unsafe working conditions or practices, to their supervisor for resolution. Additionally, employees are encouraged to report safety concerns by completing a PS Form 1767, Report of Hazard, Unsafe Condition, or Practice. The purpose of PS Form 1767 is to provide a channel of communication between employees and management that ensures prompt analysis and corrective action is taken. Managers are instructed to resolve the situation if possible. They are required to complete a work order, attach it to the top copy of the PS Form 1767, and to provide follow up to see that the safety issue has been corrected. The manager is also to notify the employee of the results. The most important part of the entire process is the immediate reporting of safety concerns to a supervisor, followed by the supervisor correcting the situation.

    Bill, Thank you for the information. As I stated this may have been a disgruntled employee, however, he did say that he reported the safety issue to his supervisor. He then took things into his own hands and moved the packages that were blocking the exit. He then stated that this is what got him trouble and eventually lost his job. So with this being said, I appreciate the information and I will follow up with him and ensure that he did indeed file the appropriate paperwork. Thanks again, Brian

    In my past experience dealing with safety violations, You investgate it and if it's legit you deal with it, But if it was used as a tool to mess with someone, stop it in it's tracks because the Tit for Tat reports will start flying. Your there to ensure safety not as a tool for management or employee's who have other agenda's. You gotta be objective. Safety can be one person's tool and another's weapon but Some people bite back with a vengeance.

    I was approached by a gentleman that stated that he worked at a facility and the egress path was blocked by two pallets of mail. I am a fire prevention officer and informed him that I could go there and request that the pallets be moved, however, I had no jurisdiction in the building. My question is who has the authority to ensure that exits/egress and general public/worker safety is enforced at these facilities? I realize that this could just be a disgruntled employee, however, this is an issue that was presented to us and I would like to know where to turn if this happens again! Thanks for the info,

    I’m sure the Post office uses some type of risk management table, like the army’s composite risk management or the navy’s Operational risk management both are basically the same. Unless it was in front of or blocking a main door it could be an issue. But you never know maybe someone did a risk assessment with a super computer adding in all the egress routes plus all sorts of scientific data while wearing a lab coat, looking at a pie chart with beeping sounds going on in the background and Found out that it would be acceptable and safe to put the pallets there so the mail moves faster. I guess you would say something to a manager. But if it’s in your way and someone put it there on purpose to cause the disruption of your work, Smile, move it, go around it, move it back then say thank you. 2 Pallets of mail isn’t going to stop me from getting as far away from whatever serious situation is making me use an egress route. Safety is also like the C.I.A they only catch shit when something goes wrong but never get a thank you for all the 100’s of times they did something good.

    There is a bad smell coming from our bathroom drain in the middle of floor in p.o. bathroom. All that is ever done with it is place a box over it in the path to walk in. Also there is water leak near air coditioner above an electrical outlet. Also there is water on concrete from this that the employees stand in to work, even thou its mopped up it stays wet for a long period of time. It has ben reported to the owner, and was not fixed, as they didn't see a problem.The carrier case light is plugged in to this outlet and it has shorted out in the past. Post master sees no problem with it. HE ALSO SEES NO PROBLEM WITH THE SEWER GAS OR SMELL, EVEN THOU CUSTOMERS AND WORKERS IS CONCERNED.

    There are curently less than 272 Processing Distribution Centers and Facilities. The USPS no longer is a participant in the VPP Corporate program. OHSA did not renew the USPS application which expired in April of this year. The second question,"Did you report your concern(s) and did management take appropriate action?" is misleading. A yes response would apply for the concern and action taken. A no response would also apply to both the concern and action taken. You did not give an option for answering the concern and action or inaction taken differently.

    Truth be told you should take pride in your work no matter what it is, And as stupid as it may sound or whatever, Your serving your country while working for the post office and You should be proud of it, For what the post office pay's I'm proud to take out trash and sweep floors. How do I stop receiving emails that links me to this site. I always get one when I'm typing a lot of stuff.
