The global pandemic of COVID-19 has impacted our country in ways that were unimaginable months ago. It is changing how people across the U.S. and around the world are working, shopping, even interacting with one another. States have ordered many stores and businesses to close. Businesses that continue to operate are faced with protecting their employees and customers, while coming up with creative ways to market and deliver their products.

The Postal Service continues to serve the public, operating on the front line, fulfilling the universal service obligation to deliver to every house and business every day. USPS is finding itself serving a population that is relying on it now more than ever. For many home-bound and quarantined people, home delivery is the only source for medicine and other vital supplies. During this time, the Postal Service has also prioritized the safety of its employees and customers.

We recognize the reality of the pandemic and have adapted our operations to maintain continuity while ensuring the safety of our employees. We are taking abundant care to minimize exposure to both our employees and Postal Service employees, using technology whenever possible. As we have told our employees, we also ask you to follow CDC guidelines, remain home as much as possible, and stay safe.

For questions or concerns about delivery during the pandemic, please go to usps.com to track mail or get information from the USPS Coronavirus FAQs page.

Postal Service employees, for work-related complaints or issues, please use our Hotline to let us know.

Read a lot about delays in the Chicago area of late, ordered a package from Illinois to Québec (Canada) around 5/08/2020 hasn't moved in two weeks. A global pandemic can surely cause many disruptions in services, but I believe in "adapt, improvise, overcome" maybe providing users a "parcel queue" for processing of sorts could appease the masses and avoid losses: both logistically and financially. Just a thought.

Agree. I have a needed package in ISC Chicago since May 9. Very distressing. I feel like I’m living in a third world country. How are we not able to do at least a little better than this?

I would like to know what I can do about my local post office withholding mail. I for medical reasons can not wear a face mask, I was told I can no longer go to the post office and get my mail. We do not have a way for home service, I have to go in for my mail. They told me not to return without a mask on. That is NOT ok, it is also a federal crime to withhold my mail.

Hello, I'd like to say thank you to all the USPS workers for working in this difficult time. I mailed a priority mail package on April 28th from Chicago to Germany. I was told it would take 6-10 days no doubt. Now with the virus I understand there may be even a longer delivery time. I need my package to arrive there by June 9th. I filed a claim and was even told by USPS agents on the phone that my package will definitely arrive before June 9th. I guess all I'm asking is reassurance and is is still realistic for me to have hope that it will arrive before June 9th? Thank you.

Hello I filed a claim for my package because I'm pretty sure its been lost. It was processed through the USPS facility ISC in New York on 5/11/2020 at 1:55 PM. It's still there. I cant get anyone to respond back to let me know what's going on with it. I know Covid 19 is causing problems but I've recieved other packages during this time without any problems. Can someone please reply back with an update?

Wendy relax. It’s normal. It could take 20 more days. Customs hands it off to the USPS and they have 21 days to get it to u. Plus the pandemic. It’s more common than u think.

I'd like to thank USPS employees first as these are unprecedented times. Many things are shipping slower than normal unfortunately it is the times we live in. We use FedEx at my job and it's been extremely slow as well. Volume is higher than normal as people are staying home. We need to be grateful for those putting themselves out there every day. Thanks again

Yeah, how heroic of them. Its easy to say when its your work, and not your personal money. Youre not the one being robbed, and its not delays, its taking something someone else paid for, and never giving it to them. Its theft. Obviously, my packages are not going to suddenly just show up after three months. These people are thieves. They are taking this stuff and keeping it.

    May 23, 2020
  • anon

It Is Theft. It is Wrong. In my case, it affects a project for work, and money. One package cost $400 + expedited shipping! One has been since May3rd, one since mid April. And, no one has a clue. I literally took screen shots of the different transit info! It has “arrived and has been out for delivery 3 times”, then says it is in a dif city to you name it! Thievery comes to mind.

Hi there! I'd like to thank all the postal workers for doing their bests during these trying times. I have been reading the comments to feel less alone in my dilemma. I mailed out my package from Detroit to Croatia on 4/3 and received updates until 4/7, "In Transit to the Next Facility." I called Customer Service and they informed me that the package has left the U.S. and there's nothing they can do. I have to contact the Croatian Post Office, in which I'm trying to file a complaint. I simply want to know that it is not lost. I assume it's stuck in Customs like the packages of so many others. Is there anyone else here who has shipped packages to Croatia (or neighboring nations)? What is your experience? My package has to be returned to me after (the recipient is repairing my item), so my question is... does anyone know a faster, easier way to ship international besides USPS? I'll pay however much (although I've noticed from the comments it may have no difference). Thank you all so much, please stay strong, we will get through this.

    May 21, 2020
  • anon

Yeah, I sent a package to Poland on April 14th and has been "In Transit..." since April 17th. I have no answer. I too would just like to know the package isn't lost. However, when I called USPS, they could not provide me any information. Hope your package arrives soon.

I think I can help with at least part of your question! I ordered a small package from Croatia to the US (North East) at the end of April.... Initially the seller had claimed that Croatia was only sending/receiving packages from the EU, however on May 3rd she was able to send it out. On May 5th my package status was Origin Post Preparing shipment..... and on the Croatia tracking site it said "placed in bag" Whatever that means. Absolutely nothing happened or changed in my tracking status until May 21st. Now its saying arrived in ISC New York, which could mean it sits there for another week, as that's happened to my international packages a few times in the past few months (Spain took 45 days). At least it's in the States. Don't lose faith yet, as insanely slow as it's been, your package will likely get back to you within a month. Hopefully that helps a little, I know how frustrating trying to find answers is right now!!

As much as I don’t want to complain, try therefore I am going to thank all the USPS employees. But if USPS is given large sum of money to operate, why not satisfy the customers? It is ridiculous how slow USPS is operating. It is taking month for delivery. Our packages are stuck in one place for over a month. Please do better and thank you for your service

I had an extremely important package coming to me form Mississippi to Hawaii, priority mail, it was sent out on the 4th of May, the expected date was 20th of May. Fine since Covid-19 I give it some patient, but my package has been departed from San Francisco distribution center for more than 10 days without updates, and now it is arriving late? what's going on man? At least give me an update! We as customers giving all our trust to you guys shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that!

I ordered an item on April 23rd for my son's birthday. It was supposed to arrive on May 6th. When it did not arrive that day or the next I tracked the order. Tracking showed "Shipment received acceptance pending CHESTER, NY" on April 27th. So, for 23 days it has not changed and my shipment is just waiting on acceptance? I understand that there is a lot going on in NY right now but I have had other orders come through there as well in recent days. We are in TN and my son's birthday is in 5 days. Is my small package just sitting in a corner somewhere because it is being overlooked? That is the feeling I am getting.

I have the same issue I have 3 packages stuck at 3 different post offices in NY with that same tracking description- 1 of the packages has been like that for almost a month! It’s crazy. It would be nice to get our packages soon... curious as to what is taking so long

I’m seeing some bizarre delays and re-routings, for instance a small package going from Manchester NH to Canton MA (about 75 miles) took a side trip to New York and took over a week to get here. And a letter mailed from Brockton MA (10 miles away) took a side trip to Providence RI and took a week to get here.

Hello, I ordered a car part from out of the country on 4/24/20 and it arrived in America on 5/8/20 in Chicago (ISC Chicago). The package has not moved since 5/8/20. Are there delays with the processing of shipments in customs? Thank you.

I have a package stuck in Chicago now that arrived there on 4/16/20. I called on 5/19/20 and was told that they process order first in/first out. I was also told to, "wait a few more days". Since yours arrived at Chicago three weeks after my package did, I'd say you have at least that long to wait before you get to "wait a few more days". Internet research indicates that packages that transition through customs in Chicago can take weeks - even before COVID.

    May 21, 2020
  • anon

Today is day 42 with no movement from Chicago. I love my local post office and appreciate all they do for the community - they get a lot complaints, but this is honestly only the second time in all my years on this planet (50+) that I have ever had anything take this amount of time or get lost (outside of the package or two that was stolen off my porch). I'm really sad this is taking so long - had I known that this would have been an issue I wouldn't have made an international purchase at this time.

    May 27, 2020
  • anon

That’s terrifying. I’ve had one there since May 9th. I’m curious if you’ve seen any movement yet? None of this feels right. The delays are exponentially worse than the issues causing them.

    May 26, 2020
  • anon

I also have a package stuck there for over a month now. Chicago appears to be a black hole for international mail right now.

    May 20, 2020
  • anon

I, too, have an international package stuck in "customs" in Chicago for well over 3 weeks. This seems insane. The expected delivery time to the US provided by the postal service in Sweden, even a week after this package was shipped, said 5-6 days. What is going on in Chicago and is there any accountability? I understand that COVID-19 has changed things a bit, but a delay of several weeks is far beyond acceptable.

I am employed as a bookkeeper at our church in San Bernardino, CA. Our members have been calling inquiring about whether or not we have received the mail they have sent to our office. It is taking a week or more sometimes to receive this mail. Our local post office is the Del Rosa branch. Please advise whether or not this is related to COVID-19.

    May 19, 2020
  • anon

Greetings, I will make this quick as I'm sure you are busy. We have gone round and round with our local post office and neither of those employees or the local department head for the post office is in our county knows the answer to this question, although they are making it much more difficult during these complicated times when we are trying to deal with social distancing and paying with credit cards as opposed to cash. Mail is not delivered in our area, every member of our community has a post office box and our post office runs on minimal hours based on the size of our town. When there is a package to be picked up a yellow slip is placed in our post office box with our box number on it. To collect our mail we need to wait until the post office is open and take the slip inside, it would appear that the yellow slip with the number on it that is in our locked post office box would be somewhat of a legal document indicating that we have needed a key to get into the box to get the yellow slip. The post office is now requiring us to bring in a piece of identification to pick up our items if we have a yellow slip. We hand over our drivers license and the person behind the counter needs to look at it closely, often holding it which seems to be an absurd act during these difficult times. SPECIFICALLY: Is this a rule handed down from the inspector general's office regarding the collecting of mail or has this rule been interpreted incorrectly by our local postal employees. Can you please site specifically the regulation number that requires us to handover our drivers license or identification to pick up mail with a yellow slip in our post office box, this does not reference re-delivery items. Thank you for your time Nicole Wright

    May 19, 2020
  • anon

Nicole, it has been USPS policy for years that you are required to show identification for pick-ups. It sounds like your local office had been lax on the policy before and were either called out for failure to adhere during an audit or they had issues with people taking random slips and "cashing them in" for packages that belong to others. A yellow slip is not a legal document as only contracts are legally binding. Section 608.10.10 of the domestic mail manual outlines acceptable forms of identification and the cases in which they are required to be presented.

This is absolutely ridiculous! I've been waiting on a package that was mailed out 10 days ago! The package sat in N. Jersey for 8 days, without moving AT ALL! Yesterday, it made it to Detroit! I'm in North Carolina. My package literally went the entirely wrong direction. And guess what? It's still sitting there! I understand that there is a virus going around, but USPS was given 10 BILLION DOLLARS!!! AND YOU CAN'T GET YOUR PACKAGES TO YOUR CUSTOMERS? That's total BS! That package contains very important medications that enable me to live life with less pain. (I'm a chronic pain suffer) And USPS could care less about their customers. I'm disgusted and appalled at the level of sheer disregard USPS has for it's costumers. I'm typing this while in extreme, horrific pain because you twits at USPS can't get your job done! Isn't your motto something like "Rain, sleet, snow no matter what we deliver!" I will NEVER use USPS again! I hope you jerks at USPS feel all the pain your giving to chronic pain sufferers like myself WHO DEPEND ON USPS TO BE ON TIME!

I’m in the same boat. What used to take 7 days is now upwards of 45 days and even then I’m not sure it will even get here at all. Not to mention the porch pirates running around due to the slack law enforcement in CA. They’re letting everyone out of jail or just not prosecuting at all. It’s a mess and a free for all. California really is returning to the Wild West again. I hope you get your package soon.

Every single reason is great excuse to explain why they sucks... bunch of lazy morons - die USPS - nobody will cry...

    May 20, 2020
  • anon

Greg, I would cry if we lost the USPS. Given it's budgetary and regulatory constraints the USPS is extraordinarily effective and efficient. Do y'all understand that the USPS is at the same time self-funded AND prohibited from charging higher shipping rates? That's quite a tight-rope. And for all you complainers and defectors to UPS/FEDEX: look forward to shipping rates 4x higher and items that are regularly damaged on arrival!

    May 26, 2020
  • anon

As someone who's pretty furious about SEVERAL packages that are currently "lost in the mail" over the past few months, I would cry... Partially because it's actually kind of sad to see how people have turned on the USPS due to events out of its control. But also because I understand exactly why this is happening, who's perpetuating it and what their end goal is. And it's disturbing. This pandemic has shown just how PRICELESS the USPS is. Not only that, but the way they were able to operate so quickly before all of this (on a shoestring budget that is disappearing every year), was incredibly impressive. It still boggles my mind how fast their priority mail was up until March. And for how much? How much did they charge for stamps, like 40 cents? It's amazing to me that this one political party was so successful at poisoning the minds of Americans against the USPS (though should I really be surprised? That party is essentially a cult now). There are interests in this country that have been "starving the beast" so to say with respect to the USPS for decades, and have now used this pandemic as an opportunity to pounce. They want the USPS gone, and one big part of that plan is MASSIVE CUSTOMER OUTRAGE AND DISSATISFACTION. These people cannot comprehend providing a service to citizens without seeking profit, and they see this as an opportunity to cash in. Not only do we have a pandemic causing delivery delays across the board (I'm waiting for a UPS package that was supposed to be delivered yesterday. Tracking was altered after the fact and now says "in transit" again. So it's not just the USPS), but we far and away the most corrupt administration this nation has ever seen in charge. It's pretty simple really: You stop funding for a chronically underfunded (and NECESSARY, I mean do you seriously want to start using Fed Ex and UPS for all of our mail now? You know it can be searched without a warrant? You know it costs A LOT MORE MONEY because they private corporations seeking to make a profit, right? Regressing from a publicly funded postal service (with an option to pay a premium for a private carrier) that does not have a profit incentive and is meant to answer to the American Taxpayer, to forcing one or two massive corporations on us for every single delivery we have is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. You are buying into the outrage. Be angry, but don't be angry at the government employee (who is a person just like you and me, believe it or not) who gets paid peanuts yet does the work of 4+ people because of due to under-funding of their service. Be angry at the politicians who are ON RECORD saying that they want the USPS to fail. It's real easy to claim government never works, when you do everything in your power to make sure it fails (at the expense of my tax-dollars). Be angry at the lobbying and special interest that is funneling money to the Republican party so that they will do everything in their power to sabotage the USPS and open up INCREDIBLY LUCRATIVE government contracts for private companies like UPS and Fed-Ex.

I understand that there is a pandemic going on but as far as the USPS location Chicago ISC, there has been way more complaints about terrible service even before the pandemic hit. Hello Inspector General are you just going to ignore these complaints? Bad services include extra long package holds, lost packages, sending to wrong locations etc.? Why have contact info if no one answers the phone? I just so happen to be an essential worker so i did not get any time off during this pandemic. So i don't think USPS should use this pandemic as a crutch for bad management practices. Inspector General i am speaking to you personally so do your job read the reviews and fix this issue for your fellow Americans who need there packages.
