When it comes to mail, customers want visibility — that much is clear. The U.S. Postal Service’s answer is the Informed Visibility (IV) data analytics platform, which provides customers with full visibility for all mail and packages.
The Postal Service is leveraging this system to compete in today’s marketplace to gain customers’ confidence that mail is still a relevant form of communication. So, it’s an important investment.
But like all data platforms, security is essential. Servers and databases need to meet stringent standards. Our latest audit report looked at the Postal Service’s IV servers and databases to determine whether they complied with USPS security control requirements and industry best practices, and whether they posed a risk to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system.
Overall, we found the system complied with those standards, but we identified four opportunities to strengthen the system’s security and reduce risk. These opportunities involved system configuration; encryption and authentication; account management controls, such as passwords; and configuration baselines. Our recommendations centered on instituting protocol and strengthening controls in those areas.
