We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue.

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations.

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse.

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work.

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring.
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints.

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package. We ask you to contact your local post office or USPS Customer Service, (800) 275-8777. Or, go to USPS.com and enter "Customer Service Help" in the search function.

I sent an international package to Ghana early this year. When the the receiver went to get it, she was told one otem, that was a cell phone had been stolen from on arrivalt. She was given a form that said the item was stolen before the package got to them and that I should make a complain to usps which I did. I later received an email from usps that the package was delivered. The package was delivered but one item stolen. Am I entitled to a refund or who should I talk to about this.

Thanks for your message. For mail theft, we recommend filing an online complaint with our Hotline. You can access the online complaint form through the OIG website.

I am a self-employed CPA in Worthington, MA and I have noticed a serious decline in the timeliness of mail going to and from the Boston area. I used to get regular mail from Boston overnight in years past but now it takes weeks to get packages. One package sent from Cambridge with the correct zip code on it (clearly written) was sent on March 6th and didn't get to me until after April 1st!! Imagine. Other packages going the other direct (Worthington to Quincy) were sent on March 24th and as of April 9th are still not delivered.

Sent a package on 03/27/18 to arrive in time for my grandsons birthday. According to the PO i sent it from and the tracking number it would be deliver 3 DAYS before his birthday. Nope been sitting in the Springfield MA Distribution Center for 4 DAYS and will not be delivered in time for his birthday. Very disappointed and looking at all the comments this seems to be an ongoing issue. Springfield MA Distribution Center needs to step it up and make sure customers packages are getting delivered in a timely manner. This is unacceptable.

Apparently, the Click n ship issue has been going on since 2009. Why on earth has it not been fixed by now? It is very frustrating!! I have used different computers, every browser out there and and every form of payment I have and still payment is declined. And it is NOT me or my payment methods. They are all good.

Over 1 hr wait to reach a live agent on the phone. Horrid service and even worse attitudes with the majority of workers. Time to privatize.

There is nothing more unprofessional than a worker who is on his phone/earpiece everytime I see him in my lobby. Today I held the door for him and not even a thank you. I had to chase him back out to ask about a missing package that I know he delivered 2 days ago. I asked, you delivered a box on Tuesday right? He simply shook his head no and got in his truck and drove off. SO SORRY to interrupt your conversation! It must be more important than doing your job or being honest with your customers. I can't believe that USPS allows their employees on their phone. Every worker in the last 3 years has just been on the phone non-stop not to be bothered by anyone. Now they are lying to my face! It's getting to the point that I am willing to pay double for my shipping just so that I don't have to deal with this nonsense.

Would love to comment and voice my concerns once again. March 14th shipped a total of 16 items with USPS. Over 10 so far have not been delivered. We try to contact managers at USPS where items have been dropped off for proper weight, talk to anyone on the phone at the 800 number (which is useless you can not get anyone). The blame game is non stop as to who is responsible for this mess. Delays, lost of items and theft are a major concern when it comes to 16 items and over 10 lost into thin air. As for the Brooklyn office, not sure they respond either. USPS should change their slogan to USPS we do not deliver for you!!!!!!! But we help ourselves to items we like and say they are delayed or lost, with tracking and First Class Mail.

In the past 2 months I have sent out 5 packages. I have made 7 trips and/or phone calls to find out why they haven't arrived when expected. The first one was still at the sending office after 5 days because the sorting machine ripped off the label. The second arrived at its destination after 10 days. The third has still not been delivered, so I replaced the items and sent again. Today I found out that one is still at the Williston, VT facility and has been since March 26. The last box I sent out came back because the Postmaster said I didn't pay for the correct postage. I've bought postage online and in person at the facility. Nothing seems to make a difference. What gives?

Two revenue maker ideas: 1) Camouflage pattern boxes (to better tuck deliveries away from those who would steal them). 2) How about honoring each of our Nation's Canine "officers" in Law Enforcement AND in our Military along with their specialty(s)? I believe this would be such a popular and important series that many stamps would be sold to use, and definitely to COLLECT. If their Handlers could be included, that would make it all just perfect. If the scope of honoring all is too large, I suggest honoring those injured or lost in the course of their duties. Hope you are able to implement these ideas. I give them to you freely. : )

During my visits to the USPS locations I witness USPS employees receiving a lot of mean comments and rarely a comment of thanks. So I'd like to give a good comment and my appreciation to Post Master Antwan Buggs in McLean VA for locating a lost package and for redelivery. Thank you for all that you do and for taking the time to search for the package.

Perhaps this has been suggested already, but I really feel that if the post office were to set up a secure and USPS backed email system for every physical address and and then charged a penny an email to send, and made it free to receive, it would go along way to cutting down spam, at the same time generating revenue and prestige. All someone would have to do is register their address on line with the USPS. The post office could then send out a post card to that address to verify the application.

Our mail is being lost, mutilated or robbed of contents unless we Priority mail it for $6.20. This is extortion. I have reported this before, and get no help. I can mail two envelopes same day from another state into Mississippi and another state. The other state gets their mail delivered within two or three days, but it has been TWO WEEKS and the mail is still not delivered in Mississippi. This is a state-wide problem and the local post offices blame the Jackson Hub. I mailed cards Priority for $6.20 and they are delivered on time, but the same card mailed for .50 are either NEVER delivered , or when they finally come in, they are ripped open and the contents stolen. What is going on? You use to be able to trust the post system, but not anymore. This is not an isolated case but happens consistently like we are some kind of third world country!

My package has been just sitting in IL for over a week. It needs to go to my house in IN. What is going on? I called twice yesterday and today and on both day I was on hold for over an hour and 15 minutes. Both times USPS dropped the call. I turn to your website and tried emailing you but you email option has been disabled so that no one can email you. I know you are a Government entity but we are CUSTOMERS that have paid. There is NO reason why I shouldn't have my package by now.

I have also had 2 packages, 1 from Europe, the other from California, never arrive. I also feel that this might be the result of theft, and am proceeding to file a formal complaint against this location. Similar to the other individuals who have commented on this page, there is definitely a pattern of "missing items" at the Garden City location, and unfortunately, I've had to get a local politician involved (sorry).

I have been waiting for an important piece of mail sent from Morgan Stanley in NC last Thursday to me in Wakefield MA. It has not arrived as yet and as your website says it should take 1-3 days I want to know where it is. Earlier, another piece of mail that I was assured was sent never arrived at all. I googled "why is the mail so slow" and it said because there is less mail sent these days it takes longer. This makes absolutely no sense, if it was because of a heavy volume of mail , it's understandable, but not when there is not much work for the workers to do.

This is the second time the USPS has lost a package of mine in 2018. No available way to find out what the situation is. If the Big carriers (UPS-FEDEX) of private sector operated as this they would be out of business. It appears the USPS is being controlled and manipulated by the Amazon giant and everyone else will suffer that consequence.

Click and ship does not work with Safari or Google Chrome....works fine with Internet Explorer which I DO NOT HAVE. This has been like this for over a year now. I get this message: Sorry, your transaction has been declined. Your transaction cannot be processed at this time with this payment type. I have tried everything and nothing works. It is not my card, the address is right it is your system. I look it up and there are people complaining about this everywhere. May want to think about getting this fixed. I prefer not to go and stand in line at the post office. Guess I will start using UPS and Fed Ex more.

The post office is getting more and more evasive about responding or being responsible to answer customer complaints. In Arizona, you can no longer dial directly to most offices, you can only call a 80002758777 number. Even back when you could, they would treat you like you were annoying them and bothering them. They had no fear of repricution and no disciplinary actions seem to roll out either, as you could drive over months later and the same person would still be working there even though multiple people complained about that staff members stinking attitude and disrespectful tone. Additionally this website is a joke. You can take the time to file a complaint, state that you had already called the 800 number, and they will eventually just route you right back there without having spoken to you, sent you an email that accepts no reply and tell you in short words, "They don't care, not their problem, talk to the consumer advocates at the 800 number, where you got no results the first time". Super sorry!! No accountability for taxpayer dollars.

I mailed a certified letter to a Govt. office in Washington D.C. on 3/13/2018. It arrived at the WA D.C. Distribution Center 3 days later on 3/16/2018. Since then the tracking shows the letter as being "In Transit" then "Arriving at Wasington D.C. Distribution Center". For the last seven days the certified letter has been "in Transit" and then "Arriving". One of the only reasons that this happens is because clerks and Management at the D.C. Processing Center are dumping mail back into the mail processing stream rather than sorting the mail and delivering it. OIG really needs to audit mail processing at the D.C. Distribution Center.

Paid for two day shipping. It had been 4 days and my package has not arrived at it’s destination. When I punch in tracking all it says is “delayed” with no further details on when it will arrive. It is really important package. I have been put on hold for 1hour and 30 mins to speak to customer service when they said the originally wait time was 1 hour. This is not the first time this has happened.

First of all the JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER has a very serious problem of mail being stolen from that facility I plan to organize a group to test those high ups at that facility as it is my belief there are many involved in organized crime specifically taking place at the JERSEY CITY NJ NETWORK DISTRIBUTION CENTER Packages are stamped in Time stamped labels are pulled and to hide the thefts these labels are then scanned with 0:00 time stamps for several days to hide these thefts from those who mailed the packages. furthermore packages especially Media Mail are cut open to figure out the value then pilfered and boxes from large shipments of new merchandise are stamped using this 0:00 time stamp system to hide the tracks of the thieves. I am calling for the resignation of all in charge and a new batch of supervisory people picked by a government security agency be installed. Just from the sheer number of complaints of pilfering and theft my guess is that millions of dollars worth of merchandise is stolen from the mail. The Inspector General has turned a blind eye to the theft. It is time to organize an outside group to check on the Inspector General as it is suspicious as to why he refuses to deal with the massive theft and pilfering of both Foreign and American Mail at this facility. He is not only not doing his job, but he seems not to take theft seriously, is it because he is part of this money making machine? I am calling for a Federal Investigation of the current inspector General and I will not stop until he contacts me and tells me why he is not dealing with massive theft. I have files of online complaints. I have started accumulating e-mails and I intend to start a YouTube and Facebook campaign through Social zmedia to point the finger at this useless Inspector General. I intend asking for his resignation and I intend to use the Federal Government for investigating him as I believe he is profiting from what if’s going on as there is no other reason why no attempt is made to put a stop to these thefts.

WORST customer service I have ever had, impossible to find out how to contact them about an "undeliverable" package, (a million clicks to get a simple customer service phone number) if you email customer service, hope you have some time on your hands with the 5 pgs of information when all they really would need to help you is an address name phone # and tracking #). Spent an hour trying to help the robot on the phone (that will not accept any answer or help you reach a human that can actually DO something about your mail) understand what i was saying, and then the wait time was 1 hr 30 minutes. Wouldnt you think if the package was undeliverable they would contact you, and try to work with you to redeliver it?

USPS Regional Facility GREENSBORO NC DISTRIBUTION CENTER is having severe irregularities in getting mail to where it should be . Packages will get there then this facility will send them back to where the package originated from. The packages ( and other mail ) once arriving in this center are getting misdirected on a more than often basis and in instances lost forever . I feel there needs to be some serious investigations into the handling of mail at this facility asap !!

My package seems to be sitting in ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) since 15th March. According to the USPS tracking page, it has already cleared customs. USPS claim to have not received it yet. Can you explain to me why it is taking so long to be transferred from the processing facility to the USPS? I understand that you will not go and find a lost package but I would at least like some information on whether it could be lost or if it is normal for your customs to not bother sending on the parcels that arrive there. The USPS customer service is unhelpful and an utter disgrace to the USA. The representatives should be better trained in how to handle unhappy customers.

I found a delivery notice on my door Monday... signed it and put in my mailbox for delivery the next day. it was ignored, although I did receive other mail. I logged into the USPS.co/redelivery site and set up a rediverly for today... post person was here, no delivery) I tried repeatedly to call and get a live person on the phone at both the main number ((1-800-275-8777) told hold time would be over an hour).. and the local post office (14910 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618) number (813) 908-3478 (no answer... ever... called 10-15 times) - the tracking number on the delivery slip is apparently not recognized by your system either...5293058031391287. So far, no delivery, no person to speak to... and I cannot take the time to drive to the post office and wait an hour in line. So far, not thrilled with the customer service I have received. Currently listening to hold music... yes, trying to call USPS again, and get someone on the line. Been 20 minutes so far... was told this call that it would be 1 hour 20 minutes... HELP! It should not be this difficult!

I am ONCE AGAIN having "delivery issues" with my mail, Today a package was JAMMED into my box along with crushing it the carrier also crushed letters by JAMMING the package into a space too small for all to fit properly. Also a second package was not delivered as the carrier was TOO LAZY to walk down my driveway which is exactly 90ft from my rural box. It is OUTRAGEOUS that I have to do a postal workers job of package pickup & delivery yet I DO NOT get paid by USPS to do THEIR job. I am NOT asking for something special or extra, I simply WANT MY MAIL delivered in a timely & proper manner.

I just had the worst customer service experience of my life with the USPS. All I wanted to do was call my local post office (Saco, Maine) to ask a question about a package being delivered to my home. I spent half an hour trying to navigate the automated phone service and when I finally got to the point where it should connect me to a representative, the automated voice told me the wait time was an hour and fifty minutes. I hung up and went through the whole menu again to see if there was a mistake. Nope, I was again told there was an hour and fifty minute wait time. Seriously? The exact same wait period? Who is waiting on the line for two hours? I just want to ask a question. I will never use USPS if I can avoid it. I am not surprised the USPS continues to lose money.

I was just at the Post Office and left feeling very discouraged. I wanted to mail a children's book to my grandson in Germany. The book weighs 14 ounces, the price to mail was over $23.00! How unfortunate that the cost of postal services is almost out of reach. I have always encouraged my family to use the postal services and keep people working. Now, I understand why they decide to use to email, and pay for monthly bills online, the cost is much less. I can't believe it cost over $20.00 to mail a $6.00 book. Perhaps you can explain why. I am sure I am not the only one mailing packages internationally. In the future, I will just have my son buy the book in Germany and I will electronically send him money, way cheaper.

Hello USPS, I just had a pleasant experience at North Kingstown. The Mobile Unit was set up so that I could buy a card to send as well as 20 stamps. This saved me a lot of time, and the postal worker also pointed out the additional services that are available at the Mobile Unit. This morning was busy in North Kingstown because we had 12 inches of snow yesterday and few people were out. One person that was out was the local carrier. So even as the snow had accumulated 6 or 7 inches, the little USPS mail truck was delivering my mail Thank you for the new service as well as the ongoing mail delivery. Sincerely yours, Jim Ganung

I pick up our company mail at the USPS Baseline Rd Location in Little Rock Arkansas. Is there some reason why that the Lobby cannot be opened at 6:00AM in the mornings? I cannot explain to you how many times that I either have to call or walk around to the side door at 7:00 to 7:30AM to ask them to open the front door. Now if I call the regular number I get voice mail or it goes to and automated 800 number. This is VERY time consuming thing that I have to do. How ever I have the solution. Give me a key to the Lobby and the Post Master won't have to worry about it any more. I am sure that this email will not cause any changes to be made but it would be nice if they would PLEASE open the door at 6:00AM as advertised. Thanks
