We didn’t create our blog just to use the catchy name, Pushing the Envelope. We did it to inform and engage stakeholders about our work, particularly our audits and white papers, and the occasional topical issue.

That work, by the way, is rooted in our mission of ensuring efficiency, accountability and integrity in the U.S. Postal Service, its revenue and assets, and its employees. As an independent agency with oversight responsibility of USPS, the OIG also helps to maintain confidence in the postal system and to improve the Postal Service’s bottom line through independent audits and investigations.

We aren’t the Postal Service – so we can’t locate a missing package or redirect your mail – but we do work with USPS to root out fraud, waste, and abuse.

Over the years, we’ve added GovDelivery and the Audit Asks forum for future audits, as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to stay connected with our stakeholders. We also invite you to comment on recently posted audit reports and white papers. There is no shortage of ways you can comment on our work.

We do read your comments. These comments, and the instant communication via social media, truly inform our work. In some instances, they have prompted audit reports or investigations:

  • A commercial customer’s comments raises concerns about delayed First-Class Mail Flats, which led to audit work to determine where in mail processing the delays were occurring.
  • In another case, customer complaints to our Office of Investigations, as well as social media posts, alerted us that some package delivery scans in certain cities might be false. Scans indicated that packages were delivered when they really hadn’t been. Our audit confirmed suspicions, and we recommended USPS to make necessary improvements.

However, as our online presence grows and social media engagement continually changes, we realize the need to update our comment policy. To that end, we’ve recently tweaked our policy, which you can find here. We encourage comments related to the content of the blog, report, or white paper, and we ask that you visit the Contact Us page on this site for information on where to file complaints.

So yes, we read your comments and take them into consideration for future work. However, as we are not the Postal Service, we can’t make any operational changes, fix a leaky roof at a post office, or find a lost package. We ask you to contact your local post office or USPS Customer Service, (800) 275-8777. Or, go to USPS.com and enter "Customer Service Help" in the search function.

We welcome your comments related to the topic on this page. Complaints about the Postal Service, including lost, stolen or mishandled mail, that are unrelated to the content on this page, will not be posted. Please visit the Contact Us page for information on where to file formal complaints with our agency or the Postal Service.

USPS obviously does NOT want people to contact them with problems. Any attempt to get to carrier-related issues leads straight to tracking. Other attempts failed also. So I got a brilliant idea: try to buy something from them (stamps)! I got to a real person immediately. This problem is way too bad for even a government agency to create it accidentally. They are underfunded and this is one way for them to save cost, by treating their customers like crap. And this is a government agency treating us this way. Despicable.

A few years ago I had a tracked parcel that was lost and insured and it was never found nor did I get reimbursed on the insurance and the lost package was an expensive briefcase with items totaling 3000 bucks. Never any more info. Now I have multiple items purchased from u.k and China stuck for a month at i.s.c. l.a and no info available. No wonder you idiots have almost closed down the USPS. No one does they're job at any locations....the laziest and most inefficient system. Amazon should not sponsor utilizing your service.

you see all you people are wrong!!!! the post office is run by the dumb thing that brings your mail to your box, there for complaining to inspector general is a big wast of time, what is needed is some competition for the postal service so maybe we can put them out of a pay check because they do not really have a job. it is called a boycot of their service until they can get their act together or just go away. i mean for real people who needs an idiot leaving all kinds of your info in just what ever box they come to, talk about id theft this is a very good way to lose your info to joe blow down the street

I moved in my apt. May 2018. Management gave me a key to the mailbox and put rest of mail on the floor. It stayed there 1 week. I waited for mailman and asked why he didn't return. He said it was an insult to him on the floor. So I handed him the return mail. And put a note my last name only. Now my mail is balled up ripped open and other people's mail still in my box. I want to register a complaint right away!!!!

TO SID: I understand. I have in writing how a supervisor will assist an ex deputy not to get mail to a rural route mail box issued and approved by the county and breaking that law you sighted . Have been down the same road including sending off at the same time to trump and the head of of OIG a letter and a letter to OIG registered mail return receipt I got one receipt back only from Trump which stated the letter inside was for his review and to be sent to OIG because I feared tampering with the mail. POINT is they don't enforce the law it is pick and choose when it involves the Sheriff of any county All the steps taken to keep it on the up and up or complain about postal service tampering is a joke unless it involves POT or drugs. You are not important. This blogg is a joke even. You can't get ahold of anyone one of worth to resolve either The more you complain they short your mail, mail does not get sent etc... Been there have done what you have done regarding the tampering with the mail. I don't have a run mail carrier problems unless directed by the supervisor who has stated she is working with the ex sheriff deputy where our box is on the property line and legally recognized and established with mail delivery to not have our mail delivered written by an attorney about this conspiracy. Think the did or will do anything? NOPE. The harder you try to get it straightened out the more lies are spent against you. Decent folks try to get things right. Those that don't want things right ignore the problem and will attempt to spin it is YOUR FAULT AND YOU ARE A DANGER. Even through they have no moral compass. Keep yours know that others have the same exact or close to exact problem with USPS employees whom they will NOT prosecute even with the laws on the books. Sounds good and official but they are hypocrites in supporting the very laws to protect you as well. They will always make excuses to support their own over you.

I haven't received my mail for the past couple of months. I thought maybe it was just taking long. But today when I want to the mail box I saw the person whim delivers the mail just open the first two unit (which is about 10 I live in an apartment complex ) and just take all the other mail and put back to the truck. I approached her to ask her if she had finished with my mail box she was very rude to me and told me that if she was putting mail in the first two units and that I couldn't approach . when all was trying to do was ask a simple question. I'd really like to get this matter resolved because I had very important mail being sent me

I am forced to purchase a PO Box at my local post office because they don't deliver to my home address and all of their "free" PO Boxes are already assigned. It doesn't sound right that I am forced to purchase a PO Box when the rest of America receives mail without having to pay for that service. The post office will refuse my mail as deliverable if I don't pay for the PO Box. Is that consistent with the policy?

I was connected with Sarah from Customer Service after being kept on hold for approx. 1hr and 15mins and after telling her my issue she decided it was okay to hang up on me when I told her I didn't feel like I had all the information I needed for a certain task we had decided we could do to resolve my issue. For someone to work in Customer Service and have such an attitude and disrespect for customers is very disappointing. Sarah said "I can't work miracles" then when I proceeded to accept this was our situation and make sure I would be able to pick up a package from the Post Office on behalf of my wife, she hung up on me while I was confirming the forms I would need. Despite my own frustrations with our situation, I was as patient as possible with Sarah and with all due respect, empathetic to her broken English but for her to not show the same respect is VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING!

I am upset with Usps. I ordered my wedding ring June 28th. I was told by the Usps tracking app it would be delivered by 8pm July 9th. It’s now the tenth and no delivery. The tracking app now says delivery date unknown. This is a problem as I am getting married this weekend. Many times over the years I’ve recieved Christmas cards that have been opened and cash removed but I’ve never thrown a fuss. This however, is intolerable. Maybe instead of calling it a “tracking number” it should be called a wondering number. I called “customer service” which was a bigger frustration. Five minutes on the phone with a robot that seems to have severe comprehension issues. The robot finally told me I could talk to a human if I stayed on hold for an hour but the human wouldn’t know anything the tracking site didn’t. Customer service isn’t the word I’d chose for the situation. I’m thinking of a word for that service but prefer to not write it in a forum for mixed company. The prices for postage and shipping keep rising but the accountability is unchanging. Maybe if the supervisors had to answer the phone and hear what is happening to the customers there would be a desire to correct issues.

I would like to know why - no one with the USPS knows how to do a refund for a package/ EDDM that wasn't delivered and its been TWO MONTHS - when I called I get someone different every time and have to start from ground zero every single time - and then NO ONE DOES ANYTHING.

Why is it taking so long to resolved the PO problem that we are having in RAYMONDVILLE NY 13678? It has to do with the security of the customer service window that was broken into about two months ago. We are paying good rental rates every year and the hours have been cut back for the employees there at 13678.

Most bills are paid online. Even then there is a 2 week window to pay a bill. 2 Days a week would be fine with myself. This past week had 2 days go by without mail. Maybe attrition out routes and have driver alternate routes - double the area. This or triple area for 2 day a week delivery. I'd also put boxes up in front yards and reduce to the door delivery as this could help double the area that can be covered. This could easily make the Postal Service make a profit again and then some. Would also help to ensure that an increase would not be needed for a while.

I placed an order online to ship to my old house forgetting i needed to switch the address to my new place but it should have been ok because I've had packages that had my old address on it and they were redirected to my new one. It's been 2 weeks since my package said it was out for delivery and there was an "alert" or something. I tried calling but the customer service line is impossible because no one ever picks up the phone after hours of waiting. And i filed a missing package request out in full and the website said i don't have enough information. To make things worse now my usps account has been disabled after a day of me making it.

The USPS delivered a package to me which was placed in a USPS receptacle near my mailbox. A key to the receptacle was put in my mailbox so I could open the receptacle and get my package. The problem is the receptacle will not open because the lock/unlock mechanism is damaged and the key will not turn the mechanism enough to unlock the receptacle. My package has now been in the receptacle for 2 days. I have called local office and cannot get assistance, my call has been on hold more than a half hour so far. This is not customer service. It is more like punishment for using USPS. I will not USPS for package delivery again.

After being assured several times by a customer service rep that my change of address form was valid I have had personal letters returned to the sender. I attempted to submit a complaint online but the USPS website is broken and there is no send button and I’m unable to scroll the webpage. I’ve been on hold for over an hour (which is typical) waiting to speak to an actual human for the fourth time in 3 weeks regarding my issue. Please do something to fix this USPS, okay my wits end.

I went to mail a birthday package on 30JUN (went to the Indian Tree post office in Arvada, CO) with the intention of using the in-lobby APC kiosk. There was an OUT OF ORDER sign on it. Went to the Eagle View post office in Broomfield, CO) to use their APC machine early this morning. It worked fine until it was time for payment, and an error popped up that said "WE CANNOT process any credit card payments at this time". I absolutely LOVE the idea of the APC kiosks, but it would sure be nice if they worked! Now I have to, physically, go to another post office... stand in line.. to get my package mailed. Because of these delays, it will now cost me more to send the package to arrive on time. Seriously?

About working on Sundays: My dad is a carrier, works full time hours with part time status. This means no benefits, no retirement, all of the work. Most of the time the only day of the week he has to look forward to is Sunday. Now they are taking that too. He has worked for them this way for at least seven years. So, I can wait an extra day so your grandpa, your sister, or son, or even you can have this one day off a week, but that’s me, I believe if someone works full time, they should get full time status, but what happens? They are afraid to speak up because they are made to feel lucky they have a job at all. Talk about an abusive relationship. Shame on you, United States Postal Service. You above all should be setting the example on how to treat your employees. Your carriers work in all weather, crazy cold to horribly hot. They get attacked by dogs, ignored, taken for granted. You can do better. And so can we!

It seems obvious from the comments that there is a desperate need for mail delivery to those unable to reach their mailboxes because of disabilities. It will become a critical issue in the near future. We have made all sorts of accommodations for the handicapped, special ramps, toilets, parking, etc.. and special services. A special program to assure that the mail is accessible to the disabled is essential-- and I think is probably required by law. Whoever is in charge of mail delivery services for the USPS should be right on top of this. Otherwise there will be tens of thousands of disabled who are not getting their mail or who are seriously injured attempting to get thier mail!

I understand that the post office wants the 35 dollar processing fee and thinks that the best strategy for this is to let most post offices process passports, but you should establish just a few dedicated passport offices in post offices with business centers to keep that traffic away from the lines that are being mystery shopped. Establishing dedicated bids for two clerks in those selected offices to work mainly as passport clerks would also ensure that customers passport needs are being met. The rest of the clerks in those selected offices should be required to act as acceptance agents, as needed, so there is not a possibility of people being turned away and potential revenue lost. The 'schedule a passport' doesn't work well because you have plenty of people who either are no shows or either schedule an unnecessary appointment for a mail-in renewal.

Our son recently moved out. I think, given the scarcity of our mail and the items conspicuously missing, that he has set a forwarding order without our permission. Yes, he is 18, but he and his dad share the same name, so any forwarding order for son means all of OUR mail will now ALSO be sent to sons new address. He knew this would happen (we actually talked about how we could set up the forwarding with the fewest problems) and did it anyway, likely anticipating our difficulties and also knowing he would NOT be bringing our mail delivered to him home in any measure of "good time." Its now almost been a month, and I've asked him repeatedly to revoke the order, but he simply ignores me. I'm worried about bills and other stuff that have stopped coming! What can I do???

I am a 79 year old, legally blind widow who has been able to remain in my own home by using mail order services of the USPS. I have been notified that package delivery to my door is being stopped after 18 years because my carrier must back up in my driveway during a delivery. I am told that there is a regulation, now being enforced, that prohibits any backing up by my carrier meaning that deliveries can be made only to households with a circular driveway. This change seriously impacts my life as a handicapped customer. Can you confirm that the No Backup Policy exists in USPS Regulations and that there are no exceptions for handicapped customers? Thank You.

There have been multiple instances when I've had a USPS package marked as delivered when it wasn't. No mail had even come yet that day. Once, I was waiting for an important part. I left work to go home and pick it up because I got an email with the tracking number link showing delivered. It wasn't and I waisted my afternoon driving around instead of working. TIME IS MONEY. Even worse, again today at 4pm it said package delivered. However, it is now 9:35pm and the mail never even came today. Not mine, not my neighbors. This is an unacceptable business practice. If you can't do your job, you should not have your job.

Liars. I get constant emails saying my package is in transit to its destination (me). Last email with specifics said it was at nearest plant 20 miles from my home. That was 4 shipping days ago. The next step is my local PO. If its in transit i should have recieved it 3 days ago. I understand tracking is an estimate but estimates are supposed to be truthful estimates based in fact not telling me what i want to hear then me losing another days work due to waiting on package, telling customer his project will be ready and the disappointing said customer and ruining my reputation therefore hurting my income. Ridiculous is what it is. Just be honest, tell me truths, dont blow smoke. USPS basically has a monopoly and they know it so they do as they please. Hopefully they will go out of buisness soon due the poor service because competition often breeds better services.

why did the post office in town remove the drive up drop off postal box which is located outside the post office. Older citizens and the disabled were able to drop off their mail easily. Now it is difficult for some to be autonomous especially in the winter. You cannot imply that in a large town, we would not benefit by this service. Additionally, the parking is inadequate. Many people in town are upset by this. What is the reason for their removal???

Hello, I would like to know who sorts the mail where I live. Every so often I order samples. I send one to my address and the other to my mothers. Which ever place who sorts for her, does a good job and she always gets the samples. I on the other hand have just moved from Bellingham, and I'm guessing its the same sorting place, ( because they never made it there either ) as my samples to my new address never make it here. EVER. Especially if they have a product name on them like keurig or Dunkin donuts. I know my mailman and postmaster here, and they are THE BEST. So I know its not them. Isn't stealing illegal? Or tampering? Thanks for listening. I have written to someone before, but I'm not sure who. juli

Hello. When I need to contact USPS regarding an issue, I have found that my usual wait time to speak to a customer service representative is 25-35 minutes. This is and egregious amount of time to wait to speak with someone. When contacting UPS the average wait time is 1-3 minutes. When contacting FedEx, the average wait time is less than 5 minutes. Something needs to be done regarding this amount of time a customer is expected to wait on the line to resolve an issue. The estimated wait time is often exceeded by 5-10 minutes as well.
