• Project Title:
  • Facility Condition Reviews - Plants
  • Start Date:
  • Thursday, April 12, 2018
  • Estimated Report Release Date:
  • December 2018

The Postal Service has over 300 processing plants where more than 150 billion pieces of mail are sorted each year. The OIG has recently conducted a series of audits on facility conditions at retail facilities and is now looking at processing facilities nationwide. The safety, security and cleanliness of these facilities is essential to the employees and customers at these locations.

  • Have you observed any maintenance, safety, or security problems at Postal Service processing plants?
  • Does the roof leak or is the heating and air conditioning not in working order?
  • Is the facility clean and free of safety hazards?
  • Are maintenance requests addressed in a timely manner?
  • Does the facility have adequate security?

The Michigan metroplex pdc in Pontiac Michigan is filthy, no postal police on campus. We have had many threats that some havent even been reported to the district threat assessment team. Employees just come and go as they please. There is no accountability. I nearly fall all the time over tripping on debris thats not only inside of the building but also throughout both parking lots as its crumbling and is in need of repair and repainting of parking lines. Maintenance requests are not addressed in a timely manner. I'm still waiting on a request from nearly 2 months ago myself. The bathrooms are stained on the floor and not thoroughly cleaned. Barely do employees wear their badges. Management at the Metroplex goes without saying anything. We are one of the biggest pdc in the country that fails everyday in one of the worst performing districts. Management falsify reports to cover their asses in terms of delayed mail. Again no accountability. The metroplex on every tour and in every area needs to be looked at. There's a reason why we are referred to as the Metro Mess. What a joke and embarrassment this place is. The metroplex doesnt represent the postal service proud in terms of service and quality. The old days were ran so much better. Lack of training and accountability in everything.

The ceiling tiles are falling down. The asbestos floor tiles are cracked. We drive over them daily. Not from our PM not trying. Work orders sent no one will show up to repair.

At my facility(South Suburban P&DC) cleanliness is a joke. Employee brake areas often have flies because the trash is overflowing and not getting cleaned. There are straps and other debris all over the floor. Empty equipment is littered all over the floor. On tour 1 and 3 you will rarely see anyone wearing an ID. Employees are coming and leaving thru the dock entrance. Almost every power outlet has employee phones being charged. Most tow truck drivers are not wearing seat belts and are often listen to music. Note: when doing investigations, if you focus on evenings or nights you will see a lot of things that you don't in the daytime.

I hope this helps because safety, cleanliness and inexperienced employees ( MHA’s , PTE’s ) are serious concerns because the NDC- Springfield, MA Is a ticking time bomb or to say it correctly, needs to b audit from top to bottom, from every corner in all sectional deemed areas. The MDO’s are more concerned about the employees doing the littlest thing considered a PDI. They walk out people while training new employees to fill the just fired employees. This is the only area the Supervisor’s or the MDO’s pay above and beyond and meanwhile the mail is either failing or gets passed around until those who care finally move that mail to the correct place. The roof leaks and it’s everywhere. Employees either knowingly don’t do their job correctly or unknowingly.

Since the custodial team cleaning (CTC) program was put into use, our processing facilitiy has never been so dirty.. The facility operates 24/7 the program put together does not allow for bathrooms to be cleaned on every shift,2shifts are police routes, with 500 plus people in the plant it doesn't work. That's only 1 example..The chemicals allowed are sub standard, the staffing of custodians needs to be increased not decreased like this program warrants.. What a waste of postal money

I work at the Priority Annex in Hazelwood, MO & have just a few comments regarding cleanliness & safety at this facility. I know this is a rented/leased facility & some issues regarding building maintenance require our people to visit with the building owner to fix but there are many issues that need to be addressed; we have air conditioning but many of the visible air vents need to have the filters cleaned or changed - you can look up & see the black soot-like filters everywhere in the building. There is so much clutter in the building - we are constantly trying to find more space for either maintenance supplies or incoming "trash" from Downtown facility; the areas designated for staging various types of mail are constantly cluttered. Security in this building is ok although I notice a lot of employees constantly ringing the bell for entrance because their badge is either lost or expired; these issues need to be addressed by supervisors because some of these employee badges have been expired for months & that is not acceptable.

A.C. doesn't work or they keep it low. Turn on fans that just blow dust everywhere. I'm not there any longer so maybe it has been cleaned up.Light duty people used to control the gates ,so no real security.City of Industry plant.
